Mercedes Benz India has begun taking orders for their upcoming electric G-Class, which will launch in India as the "G580 with EQ Technology." This iconic boxer design SUV will likely be manufactured in its original factory in Graz, Austria. The electric G580 will feature a quad-motor setup, with one motor placed at each wheel, delivering a total of 579 hp and 1,164 Nm of torque. Beneath the surface, it houses a 116 kWh battery pack, which the brand claims will offer a range of 473 km.
There's much more to the upcoming electric G-Class, which I will share below. But before that, make sure to join the 91Wheels WhatsApp group to get the latest automotive updates.

Exterior of the Electric G-Class
The upcoming electric G-Class doesn't look much different from its ICE counterparts, but there are notable updates. Mercedes has given it a new grille finished in shiny black slate, which still features air passages. Both the front and rear bumpers have been redesigned.
There are also subtle, hidden details that serve a bigger purpose. Mercedes-Benz has worked to make the electric G-Wagon more aerodynamically efficient than the ICE models, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.45 Cd, which is 0.10 Cd less than the petrol models. Additionally, it features a new alloy wheel design that contributes to its reduced drag coefficient.
Interior updates on the Electric G-Class
The story continues inside as there are very minimal updates, such as new 12.3 inch screen which has all the information for the driver and the other half dedicated for the infotainment purposes. In the screen you will find a EV mode, which provides information related to its battery, range and all things important.
The photos also reveal a new steering wheel, similar to the one found in the S-Class. The center console has also been redesigned to enhance its luxurious feel.
One important change is located in the center, between the AC vents. In the ICE models, there are three different differential locks, but in the electric version, Mercedes has fitted buttons to activate the G-Turn mode. This mode allows the SUV to execute a 360-degree turn automatically.
Battery backup of the G580
Inside, the G580 is equipped with a 116 kWh battery that supports the quad-motor setup, delivering 579 hp and 1,164 Nm of torque. Mercedes says it supports 200 kW DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 32 minutes. Additionally, it is compatible with an 11 kW AC charger.
Now that bookings have started, I expect its price to be around Rs 3 Crore ex-showroom. Additionally, there will likely be an AMG version available in the future.
