Yamaha R2
Yamaha has added a new bike to the R-series, the YZF-R2. It's the brand's first model in the fully-faired 200cc super sport segment. It rides on an all-new platform powered by a newly developed engine. The bike's design is inspired by the YZF-R6. Being the lightest in the segment, it is easy to handle, giving riders room to flick in traffic and lean the bike around corners. This caters to the requirements of every customer, from daily commutes to track rides, with its list of features. Yamaha has kept the same blend of everyday utility and aggressive riding spirit alive in this bike.

Pros & Cons of R2
What we admire in this bike
The 204cc engine makes a segment-leading 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm, well ahead of the R15 V4's 155cc unit.
Every variant, including the base bike, gets dual-channel ABS, Traction Control and Yamaha Ride Control as standard equipment.
The frame borrows YZF-R6 geometry and adds a fourth engine mounting point to cut flex between motor and chassis.
A 37 mm USD front fork and rear monoshock are standard on every variant, not just the pricier ones.
The 5-inch full-colour TFT display is shared across the range, so even the base variant feels modern.
What could have been better
The segment-first bi-directional quick shifter is missing on the base variant and needs at least Rs 9,000 more.
Smart Key and adjustable suspension are locked to the R2M, a Rs 22,500 premium over the base bike.
Only two colour choices with all three variants.
Should I buy the R2?
Buy the Quick Shifter variant if you want the full R2 experience, since it adds the bike's top feature for a small premium over the base price. Stretch to the R2M only if you want a track-like feel, with features like Smart Key, adjustable suspension and R1-inspired cosmetic touches, since that jump is more about convenience and finish than performance. Skip the base variant unless budget is the only factor, since you would be giving up the quick shifter most riders want. Buy the YZF-R2 if you want authentic R-series engineering and a lightweight chassis.
- The R2 borrows its visual language from Yamaha's global R-series flagships rather than scaling up the R15's design, with a compact bi-functional LED headlight and dual LED position lights that immediately tie it into the family face.
- The front fairing takes cues from the R6's aerodynamics, with tightly wrapped bodywork aimed at managing airflow at speed rather than just looking sharp standing still.
- At the rear, the block-style LED taillight and MotoGP-inspired swingarm give the R2 a sharper, more premium stance than rivals like the Hero Karizma and Pulsar 200 range, while staying visually competitive with the KTM RC 200.
- Variant walk-up matters here: the base bike gets all-black wheels and a matte-finished seat for a clean, understated look, the Quick Shifter variant adds body-coloured alloys and model-specific graphics, and the R2M tops it off with a 3D embossed emblem, faux suede seat and silver-finished swingarm for a more premium finish than most bikes in this price bracket.
- Colour, though, doesn't scale as generously as the styling does. Five colours are advertised across the range, but no single variant actually offers more than two, and the R2M is locked to just one, Metallic Gray.
R2 body specifications:
| Ground Clearance | 170 mm |

- Every variant shares the same 5-inch full-colour TFT display, so the instrument experience doesn't get watered down on the cheaper trims the way it often does on rival bikes.
- Yamaha Ride Control lets riders toggle between Street, Sport and Rain modes across the entire range, giving even the base-spec buyer genuine control over throttle character and traction behaviour rather than locking tuning modes to the top trim.
- The bi-directional quick shifter is the standout omission on the base bike; it's arguably the single most talked-about spec on the R2, and it's simply not there unless you pay more.
- Smart Key is exclusive to the R2M, meaning keyless convenience, a feature increasingly common even on mainstream commuters, is reserved for Yamaha's costliest R2 variant.
- Adjustable clutch and brake levers, plus adjustable front fork and rear shockers, are also locked to the R2M.
- The 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine makes 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm, edging out the KTM RC 200's 25 PS and 19.2 Nm, and comfortably ahead of the Bajaj Pulsar 200 range.
- The claimed 149 kg kerb weight is genuinely light for the segment, undercutting the Hero Karizma XMR's 163.5 kg and the KTM RC 200's roughly 160 kg, giving the R2 a real edge in flickability.
- Yamaha Ride Control's three riding modes work directly with the engine and traction control mapping, letting riders dial back aggression in Rain mode or open the taps fully in Sport, a level of tunability neither the Karizma XMR nor the Pulsar 200 range offers.
R2 engine specifications:
| Engine | 204 cc |
- Dual-channel ABS is standard on every YZF-R2 variant, including the base bike, which isn't guaranteed at this price point across the segment.
- Traction Control comes standard across the range too, helping manage wheel slip under hard acceleration, particularly useful given the engine's segment-leading power figures.
- The Assist & Slipper Clutch reduces rear-wheel hop on aggressive downshifts, adding confidence when riders are pushing the bike hard into corners.
- 37 mm USD front forks and a tuned rear monoshock are shared across all three variants, so braking and chassis stability aren't compromised on the cheaper trims, only the fine-tuning ability to adjust that suspension is.
