Pros

The Stance

MG Hector Plus

MG Hector offers a big SUV stance on a budget. It comes with boxy design language and offers a good road presence. The Hector Plus comes with a bold front fascia with a big chrome grille, the side profile gets 18-inch alloy wheels with big wheel arches, and the rear gets a connected LED tail lamp. The brand has used a lot of chrome on the Hector to make it shine and it worked in its favour.

Competition Check: The Hector Plus is considered a mid-size SUV in India but it offers a good stance. If we look at the rivals like the Hyundai Creta or KIA Seltos, they seem small in size as compared to the Hector Plus.

Option of 6-Seater Variant At No Additional Cost

The Hector Plus comes in two seating layouts, one is the seven-seater version with a bench in the second row and the other is a 6-seater version with captain chairs in the second row. Generally, the six-seater versions with captain seats are costlier than the 7-seater variants, but MG has done a good job at keeping the price of the 6 and 7-seater variants the same. The 6-seater and 7-seater both variants start at Rs 17.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

Competition Check: In the price range of Rs 17 to Rs 23 lakh (ex-showroom), the Hyundai Alcazar is a rival of the MG Hector Plus which comes with a 6 and 7-seater layout.

Feature Loaded Interior

The Hector is known for its features loaded cabin and luxurious interior quality and the Hector Plus is no exception. It comes loaded with a plethora of features which include a 14-inch vertical infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a huge panoramic sunroof, a digital instrument console, power adjustable seats, and an automatic powered tailgate, among other features. The cabin gets a rich tan leather treatment that enhances the ambiance of the cabin.

Competition Check: Rival like the Hyundai Alcazar also comes with a panoramic sunroof, touchscreen infotainment, and other features but the Hector Plus offers some more features over the Alcazar.

Offers Good Safety Features

MG Hector Plus is loaded with a good number of safety features up to 6-airbags, ABS with EBD, all-4 disc brakes, ESC, brake assist, front and rear defogger, 360-degree camera, and level 2 ADAS among other features. The ADAS is available in the top-spec Savvy Pro variant.

Competition Check: Rivals like the Hyundai Creta or KIA Seltos and some other mid-size SUVs are now available with level 2 ADAS and 6 airbags as a standard fitment.

Cons

No Diesel Automatic Option

The Hector Plus comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine which comes mated to a single 6-speed manual transmission option. On the other hand, the turbo petrol engine option comes with both manual and automatic transmission. The brand should've offered the choice of an automatic transmission with the diesel engine as well.

Competition Check: Almost every rival of the MG Hector Plus comes with an automatic transmission with a diesel engine.

The Third Row Is Not Spacious

The Hector Plus offers a three-row seating layout but the last row is not spacious. The under-thigh support is less, the seat feels cramped for adults. It is only suitable for kids. Moreover, the third row feels like a makeshift row with less space and an uncomfortable seating posture.

Competition Check: Rivals like the Hyundai Alcazar also come with a three-row seating layout and the third-row of the Alcazar is almost similar to the Hector Plus in terms of space and comfort.

ADAS Available In Petrol Variant Only

I don't know what MG was thinking while adding ADAS to the Hector Plus. The brand has only given the ADAS with a petrol engine variant, leaving the diesel variant without any ADAS features. Ideally, the brand should have offered ADAS in every engine option.

Competition Check: ADAS is now available in the Hyundai Creta, KIA Seltos, and some other SUVs. Most brands have separated ADAS features by variant, not by engine option.

Top Spec Variant Is Overpriced

The top-of-the-line Savvy Pro variant of the Hector Plus SUV is priced at Rs 22.93 lakh (ex-showroom) which is a bit overpriced considering the segment of the SUV. In the same price range, some brands are offering more feature-loaded and bigger SUVs such as the Tata Safari or the Mahindra XUV 700.

Verdict

There is no doubt that the MG Hector Plus is a feature loaded SUV but it is not a proper 3-row SUV. It does not offer much space in the third-row, it does not offer automatic transmission with the diesel engine, and it is bit overpriced. However, the 5-seater variant of the MG Hector offers good value proposition as it offers more variants.
