KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- The Tata Harrier costs Rs 14.99 lakh for the entry-level variant and goes up to Rs 26.44 lakh (ex-showroom).
- Mahindra XUV700 offers a 5-seat option, but this is only available in the mid and lower variants.

The Tata Harrier is based on the JLR D8 platform, which is also the foundation for several luxury SUVs such as the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery, and Jaguar E-Pace. This platform contributes to the Harrier's safety and on-road stability. Apart from that, the Harrier is a fantastic, feature-loaded car, making it the choice of those who want an athletic-looking, modern 5-seater SUV. In this segment, other contenders include the Mahindra XUV700 5-seater and the MG Hector.
Today, I am going to compare these three cars to determine which is the best all-around performer in the segment. So, without further ado, let's get started! And make sure to join the 91Wheels WhatsApp Channel to stay updated on the latest automotive news.

Price Comparison: Tata Harrier VS Rivals
The base variant of the Tata Harrier, called the Smart, costs Rs 14.99 lakh ex-showroom. There are a total of 25 variants, divided between manual and automatic transmissions. The top trim, Fearless Plus Dark Edition, costs Rs 26.44 lakh.
On the other hand, Mahindra XUV700 is one of the best cars in the segment, offered in multiple trims with petrol or diesel engines and seating configurations of 5, 6, and 7 seats. However, the 5-seat option is only available in the MX, AX3, and AX5 variants. The pricing starts at Rs 14.99 lakh ex-showroom, with the highest variant being the AX5 diesel automatic, priced at Rs 19.89 lakh.
The MG Hector starts at Rs 13.98 lakh ex-showroom and is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The top trim costs Rs 22.17 lakh ex-showroom, and there are a total of 17 variants on offer. It was launched in 2019, and not much has changed since then.
Tata Harrier VS Rivals: Powertrain
The Tata Harrier is only available with a 2.0 L turbocharged diesel engine, whereas its rivals offer the option of a petrol engine as well. Since the Harrier has only one engine option, I will compare the specifications of the diesel engines across all models.
Specifications | Tata Harrier | Mahindra XUV700 | MG Hector |
Displacement | 1956cc | 2184cc | 1956 cc |
Power | 170 Ps | 154 Ps / 184 Ps | 170 Ps |
Torque | 350 Nm | 360 Nm / 420 Nm / 450 Nm | 350 Nm |
Transmission | 6 MT / 6 AT | 6 MT / 6 AT | 6 MT |
Turbocharged | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The Mahindra XUV700's 2.2 L CRDe engine is offered in two configurations: one with 154 PS and 360 Nm of torque, available solely with a manual transmission, and another with 184 PS, which produces 420 Nm of torque with a 6-speed manual transmission or 450 Nm of torque with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the MG Hector's diesel powertrain is only available with a manual transmission.
Tata Harrier VS Rivals: Features List
The 2023 facelift gave the Tata Harrier a completely new look, driven by its rising sales figures. Additionally, the Harrier now includes many features that you won't even find in its rivals, the Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector, such as:
- Sequential LED DRLs with welcoming feature
- Powered tail gate
- Voice assisted panaromic sunroof
- Ambient lightning
- Dual zone climate control
- Wireless Andriod Auto and Apple Car Play
- 10 Inch digital driver's display
- 10 Premium JBL Speakers
Mahindra XUV700, does come with most of these features, but that is only avialble in the top spec AX7 or AXL7 L trims, which only comes with 6 or seat configuration. However, the it still doesn't offer a wireless Andriod Auto and Apple Car Play.
However, the MG Hector features the largest 14-inch infotainment screen, which captures your attention as soon as you sit inside the vehicle. It also includes ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, voice commands, and a powered tailgate.
Tata Harrier VS Rivals: Dimensions
All three vehicles exceed the 4500 mm length mark, placing them above the segment of the Hyundai Creta and Honda Elevate. Among them, the MG Hector is the longest vehicle, and the Hector Plus, which offers third-row seating, is simply an addition of two seats without extending the body.
Dimensions | Tata Harrier | Mahindra XUV700 | MG Hector |
Length | 4605 mm | 4695 mm | 4699 mm |
Width | 1922 mm | 1890 mm | 1835 mm |
Height | 1718 mm | 1755 mm | 1760 mm |
Wheelbase | 2714 mm | 2750 mm | 2750 mm |
Ground Clearance | 205 mm | 200 mm | 192 mm |
Boot Capacity | 445 L | 443 L | 587 L |
So, these figures show that the MG Hector is the biggest car here, while the Harrier is the widest with 1922 mm of width. Additionally, the Tata Harrier has significantly better ground clearance compared to the other two, and its overall body feels like a proper adventure vehicle. However, it is only available with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setting, which limits its off-road capabilities.

Verdict
The Tata Harrier knocks it out of the park with its 2023 facelift, and rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 have significantly dropped their prices to stay competitive on the sales charts. On the other hand, MG Hector sales have also dropped, largely due to Tatas bold new design, which features sequential LED DRLs, 19-inch alloy wheels, and striking new colors.
