After the long wait and excitement, Mahindra has finally unveiled the all-new 2020 Mahindra Thar. The 2020 Mahindra Thar is newly developed from scratch, sits on a new chassis and gets updated powertrains including petrol and diesel automatic engines. The design is modern yet contemporary and gets new interiors with front-facing rear seats. The new Thar will be offered in AX series and LX series.
The exteriors of the Thar are revolutionized with new design elements. The front gets Mahindra's grille flanked with rounded headlights whereas the bumper is extended further to accentuate the SUV look. The front fenders are squared off whereas the rear fenders are rounded. The new Thar comes with 255/65/R18 All-terrain tyres. The rear profile of the new Thar is muscular with boot-mounted spare wheel and LED taillights. Mahindra Thar will be offered with soft-top roof, hardtop roof and for the first time, a convertible option as well.
Talking about the interiors, we have got all the modern amenities along with modern and new-age features. The centre of the dashboard gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen with water-resistant buttons. Lower down the touchscreen is the sturdy and rounded AC vents which are supported with fully automatic climate control. The front seats of the Thar also get lumbar support and said to offer great comfort. The top models of the Thar will get front-facing rear seats whereas the lower variants will come with 2+4 seating configuration.
The new Thar is loaded with tech and there are no trade-offs in terms of safety. We get dual airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, hill hold control, built-in roll cage, 3-point seatbelts, ISOFIX, hill start assist, cruise control and many for features. The instrument cluster is all-new with a TFT screen and we also get steering mounted controls. The new touchscreen offers the first in segment realtime adventure stats including power, torque, G-meter, compass and wheel angle. The seats of the new Mahindra Thar are washable and as the roof panels can be removed, we get water-resistant speakers on the roof.
Talking about the power train options of the new Mahindra Thar, we get BS6 compliant 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre mStallion T-GDI petrol engine. Both the engines come with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options. The 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine of the Thar will produce 152hp and 320 Nm of torque, offered with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed AT. They may seem like a surprise, but the diesel engine of the Mahindra Thar produces lesser power and torque than the petrol - 132 Hp and 300 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed AT as well.
If you think that Mahindra has skimped on the off-road prowess of the new Thar, you are wrong. As we get a front independent suspension for better comfort and capability, mechanical locking differential, shift-on-the-fly 4x4 transfer case, the low crawl ratio of 42:1, 18-inch All-terrain tyres and much more.
