Expert Verdict on Tiguan R-Line
The Tiguan R Line is a youthful, dynamic-looking premium SUV that is capable of some light off-roading and its 2.0-litre engine packs in good punch. However, while there have been some great feature additions, certain basic features such as power-adjustable seats, a powered tailgate, and lack of keyless entry are baffling. The sport comfort seats and the low speed ride aren’t comfortable either, but it makes up for that in being an otherwise enjoyable SUV in terms of driving dynamics.

Pros & Cons of Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Detailed Review
-
The Tiguan R Line appears a lot more rounded than the outgoing car in terms of the silhouette. It gets a mesh-pattern grille and another mesh-pattern element at the rear bumper as well, and it also makes use of modern design elements such as a full-length light bar at the front and the rear.
-
The headlights and tail lights are sleeker, and it rides on 19-inch wheels. There are six colour schemes to choose from; Persimmon Red Metallic, Cipressino Green Metallic, Nightshade Blue Metallic, Grenadilla Black Metallic, Oryx White Pearl & Oyster Silver Metallic
-
There is not much of a difference in terms of dimensions; the new Tiguan R Line remains almost identical to the outgoing car in terms of width and height. However, the length has now gone up by 39mm over the previous car, while at 2680mm, the wheelbase is just 1mm longer.
Tiguan R-Line body specifications:
Wheel Size | R19 |
Seating Capacity | 5 seaters |
Ground Clearance | 176 mm |
Boot Space | 652 liters |
-
Under the hood, the Tiguan R Line comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which produces 201bhp and 320Nm of torque, paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine is capable of delivering great performance throughout the rev band, and the gearbox backs up the powertrain nicely, delivering quick and timely shifts.
-
Much like the previous car, the Tiguan R Line also comes equipped with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. This gives the car some light off-roading chops and it will prove useful in case you do decide to venture away from the regular roads. However, you must still exercise some caution and not take it to extreme situations.
Tiguan R-Line engine specifications:
Transmission | Automatic |
Mileage | 12.58 kmpl |
Engine | 1984 cc |
Power | 201.20 bhp@ 4500 - 6000 |
Torque | 320 @ 1500-4400 |

-
The interiors of the Tiguan R Line are completely new, featuring a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15-inch infotainment touch screen, and an illuminated panel on the passenger side with the R-Line logo. Being an R-Line car, VW has also equipped it with sport comfort seats with a massage function and adjustable lumbar support. However, strangely, these seats are not equipped with electronic adjustment.
-
Some other features also include three-zone climate control, Park Distance Control, Parking Assistant, 9 airbags, an 8-speaker sound system, 30-colour ambient lighting, and an updated ADAS suite, with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane change system, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, driver drowsiness detection and automatic headlamps among other things.
