Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, the performance-oriented SUV, has finally launched in India at Rs 48.99 Lakh (introductory), after weeks of heavy promotion. This SUV has now become the flagship product of this German giant automaker, and to everyone's surprise, this isn't focused on providing the best comfortable ride or high-tech features - although it is still a very luxurious car - but on giving its customers an unparalleled athletic experience that R-Line cars are known for globally.
To add more, this product is globally the 3rd generation of Tiguan and will compete with BMW X1 and Audi Q3. More details about it below. In the meantime, make sure to join the 91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to never miss out on automotive updates.

Design

Unlike the last-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, this latest model feels bigger and bolder. Out go the sharp lines with a minimalistic aesthetic - the new Tiguan feels muscular with a more curvaceous design, especially at the front. Plus, the front end appears quite bold, as the size of the headlamps has more length and width, and in between sits the illuminated light band between the headlamps that connects both headlights' LED DRLs, becoming an eye-catcher.

Now, the bumper features a huge chequered-style grille finished in glossy black or piano black paint, with a chrome slate that adds a touch of opulence. This part is a clear sign that this vehicle is a serious performance car, as the regular one doesn't have such a dramatic grille with an aggressive shape.

The side profile speaks of its huge size, but also tells us that this falls under the category of mid-size SUVs, and the 19-inch Coventry alloy wheels with a diamond-turned finish are a sight to behold. Now, the rear profile is also quite dashing, featuring bold-looking tail-lights which connect, and the middle part is of the same size and shape as the outer ones, reminiscent of many modern cars, as this has become a trend in the automotive world. In between sits the big Volkswagen logo, which feels so right there. To add more, the bumper is the same as the front end, with a chequered-style pattern and a chrome slate at the border.

Interior

As we all know this is a CBU car, so the quality levels are way better and at par with any other German luxury vehcile, same for the last generation Tigaun. Now, from the earlier generation, things have drastically improved, after all its an 2025 car. To begin with screens, the infotainment display is of 15 Inch and the driver's cockpit is of 10.25 Inch, plus there is head-up-display too. Moreover, for convenience, panaromic sunroof is there, 3-zone climate control, front seats offer massaging and lumbar support.

Also, VW adds sporty seats here, with R-Line inserts, and there are no adjustable headrests as the whole seat is just one piece, with a good-size air insert. However, the rear ones are regular leatherette with three headrests. The steering is the same as what we see in Virtus and Taigun - three-spoke -and to add to that rich experience, 30-colour ambient lighting is there.
Powertrain

The heart of this beast is a 2.0L TSI EVO with 204 ps and 320 Nm of torque, with 7-speed DSG, and for that unmatched grip, this SUV comes with AWD setup as standard, which VW calls 4MOTION. Also, there is a sporty looking driving mode selector with three modes - comfort to sport to individual.
Some important highlights of the Tiguan R-Line are - 9 airbags as standard, 4 wheel disc brake, 21 features of Level 2 ADAS, electronic parking brake, and its available in six colour option - Persimmon Red Metallic, Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect, Oyster Silver Metallic, Cipressino Green Metallic, Nightshade Blue Metallic, and Grenadilla Black Metallic.

Verdict
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line is a daring and bold decision taken by the company, as this isn't a regular luxurious SUV but a performance one, which is a very niche segment, as in India, people who prefer high-end sports cars don't really go with a mass-market brand. However, VW is quite different here, as from the beginning they're known to provide high-end performance vehicles, be it a very affordable hatchback like Polo. That said, they are also launching Golf GTI soon, and this will be a very limited production car, which is again a serious sports car. Let's see how Indians will welcome it.
