Royal Enfield is an Iconic Indian Motorcycle Manufacturer. This Madras-based Indian two-wheeler maker is known all over the world for its retro-cruisers and old-school motorcycles. RE is best known for its Bullet series, which holds the tag of the oldest motorcycle in the world to remain in continuous production. Even today, the Bullet enjoys cult status and like all other Royal Enfield's, it has huge fan-following. However, in recent times, Royal Enfield has expanded its portfolio and now the company sells a lot of other types of motorcycles too. Royal Enfield's Indian portfolio now includes the most-affordable twin-cylinder motorcycles in the country, the Continental GT 650 and Interceptor 650 and also an Adventure Tourer. 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan BS6: What is it?

Royal Enfield launched the Himalayan 400 for the first time in India in the year 2016. Upon launch, it was powered by a carburetted engine, was BS3-compliant and had quite some niggles. However, being a pioneer in the motorcycling industry, Royal Enfield acted proactively and sorted all the problems and launched the BS4-compliant Himalayan 400 in 2017 that got Fuel-injection technology too. Fast forward to 2020, just a few months back, the company launched the new 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan BS6. The Himalayan 400 is a dual-purpose motorcycle that slots in above the Classic 350 and sits below the 650 Twins in the company's India line-up.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a good-looking adventure motorcycle. For 2020, along with the BS6 update, the company has given it some cosmetic overhauls that make it look more attractive than before. Being an adventure motorcycle, it gets a lot of off-road specific bits. For instance, upfront it gets a round headlamp with a tall fly screen (visor), dual mudguards at the front (one being a high-raised mudguard), front fork cover gaiters, an aluminium bash plate and more. It also gets a tall seat with an upright handlebar, rear LED lights with a steel carrier and even spoke-wheels for better off-road capabilities.

Talking about the dimensions, the Himalayan 400 measures 2190 mm in length, 840 mm in width and 1360 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 1465 mm and the saddle height stands at 800 mm. The motorcycle gets a massive 220 mm of ground clearance and it weighs around 199 kilograms with 90 per cent fuel and oil. The Himalayan BS6 is available in a total of six colour options. These are Snow White, Granite Black, Gravel Grey, Lake Blue (new colour), Rock Red (new colour) and adventure junkies favourite Sleet Grey colour shade. The BS6 model gets two new colours that sport dual-tone type treatment, which further enhances its appeal.

The 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan is powered by a BS6-compliant 411cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, SOHC, air-cooled, fuel-injected motor that churns out 24.8 PS of power at 6500 RPM and 32 Nm of peak torque between 4000-4500 RPM. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed constant mesh manual gearbox. This engine excels off the road as it has a very good low-end performance and can also comfortably cruise on the road at highway speeds all day long. Talking about fuel-efficiency, it delivers a mileage of around 30-35 kmpl, which is very good considering it is a dual-purpose motorcycle.

2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan BS6: Tyres, Brakes and Features

The new 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan BS6 is based on a half-duplex split cradle frame. Upfront, it gets chunky 41 mm telescopic forks with 200 mm of travel while at the rear, it gets a mono-shock absorber with 180 mm of wheel travel. The Himalayan runs on massive tyres for better off-road duties. It gets a 21-inch tyre at the front while at the rear, it gets a 17-inch unit. The front tyre measures 90/90-21 while the rear one measures 120/90-17 and these tyres provide superior grip and confidence to the rider while being both on as well as off the road.

For braking duties, it gets a disc brake at both the ends. At the front, it gets a 300 mm disc while at the rear, it gets a 240 mm disc unit. It also gets a dual-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) as an additional safety aid. However, for 2020 Royal Enfield has finally offered a switchable ABS that will be very beneficial while going off-road. The company also claims that it has worked on the braking mechanism of the motorcycle to offer lesser stopping distance. Talking about features, it gets an all-analogue instrument cluster that shows a ton of information. It also gets a compass, new hazard light and an improved side stand.

The 2020 Royal Enfield Himalayan BS6 is available in only one variant but with multiple colour shades. The prices of the new Himalayan BS6 range between Rs. 1.89 lakhs - Rs. 1.94 lakhs. All prices stick to Ex-showroom Delhi. It does not have any direct rivals in India but indirectly it rivals the Hero Xpulse 200 and the KTM 390 Adventure.
