Original Article - June 27, 2020 - We Indians love retro motorcycles. However, classic motorcycles aren't very affordable in India as they are mostly fitted with high-capacity engines. Currently, the most affordable retro motorcycles are from Royal Enfield and they are powered by a 350cc mill. However, soon things are gonna change. Yamaha launched its 150cc neo-classic motorcycle, the XSR 155, in Thailand last year. Currently, it is sold in some other South Asian countries too and is now expected to hit the Indian shores very soon. So, in this article, we will be telling you everything you need to know about this upcoming 2020 Yamaha XSR 155 BS6.

Looks, Design and Colour Options

The Yamaha XSR 155 is a retro motorcycle with modern features. It takes design inspiration from its elder siblings, the XSR 700 and the XSR 900. The XSR in the XSR 155 stands for Xtreme Sports Racing. It is the smallest bike under the company's Sport Heritage line-up sold across the world. Upfront, this motorcycle gets a round all-LED headlamp with LED DRLs. It also gets a muscular fuel tank with sculpted panels. The motorcycle features a high-raised handlebar that gives it an upright stance. Moreover, it gets a slim single-piece ribbed seat with a round LED taillamp and the overall form factor of the bike seems very compact.

Engine and Transmission

The upcoming XSR 155 will share its mechanicals with the R15 and the MT 15. This means that it will get a BS6-compliant 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine. This motor will churn out 18.6 PS of maximum power at 10000 RPM and 14.1 Nm of peak torque at 8500 RPM. The engine will come coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Also, like the R15, it will get Yamahas VVA or Variable Valve Actuation technology. This high-performance VVA system provides torque for ease of use even at low RPMs. It ensures that a good amount of power and torque is present throughout the entire rev range.

Dimensions and Colour Options

The Yamaha XSR 155 measures 2007 mm in length, 804 mm in width and 1080 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 1330 mm and the saddle height (seat-height) stands at 810 mm. Mind you, this motorcycle wont be very comfortable for short riders as it has a tall seat height. However, it will be very nimble to ride as it weighs just around 134 kilograms and has a fuel tank capacity of 10.4-litres. Also, it sports a minimum ground clearance of 170 mm, which is very impressive. The retro motorcycle is available in four colour variants White/Red Sport Heritage, Premium Grey, Black Elegance and Green Wanderlust.

Tyres, Brakes and Features

The new Yamaha XSR 155 rides on 17-inch wheels and is shod-in dual-purpose tubeless tyres. Unlike other retro motorcycles which get spoke rims, it gets alloy wheels. The bike sits on a deltabox frame. Globally, it gets upside-down front forks but we expect that Yamaha will ditch this for the India-spec model. Instead, it will get telescopic forks at the front and a mono-shock absorber at the rear. The braking duties will be handled by disc brakes at both the ends and it will get a dual-channel ABS too. Being a retro motorcycle, it features a single-pod instrument cluster but it is an all-digital unit and is loaded with a lot of information. The motorcycle also gets an assist & slipper clutch.

Price, Rivals and Expected Launch Timeline

The 2002 Yamaha XSR 155 BS6 is expected to hit the Indian showrooms by the end of this year, most likely by the festive season or in early 2021. It is expected to be priced in the ballpark of Rs 1.40 lakhs - Rs. 1.45 lakhs, Ex-showroom Delhi. It won't have any direct rivals and will create its own niche segment of premium yet affordable neo-retro motorcycles. However, indirectly it will rival the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Bullet 350, Jawa Classic, Jawa 42, etc. If Yamaha prices it aggressively, it will be a definite hit in the Indian market.
