2021 Honda City Hatch Revealed in Thailand - Will This Ever Come to India?

We saw the launch of the 2020 Honda City months ago in the Indian market. The launch would have happened early 2020 but Covid stretched the timeline by a big margin. The new Honda City is doing great for the Japanese carmaker which was suffering prior to that. On the other hand, Honda has finally revealed the much-teased and anticipated 2021 City Hatch. Let's get into details and see if it is similar to the patented leaked images.

Not the RS one - It's the base S+ trim

From the front, the City Hatch looks exactly like the sedan we get in India. The same chrome grille merging into the LED headlights and the similar shoulder line running throughout the length of the car. However, the side profile is much crisper and gets a slanting rear. Interestingly, the window line is more or less similar to the sedan model. The images you see are of the RS version which gets sporty body kit and 120PS turbo petrol engine.

The rear profile of the City Hatch is the highlight and it surely has got some BMW vibes - BMW 1-series vibes to be precise. The enclosed rear profile sees roof spoiler and wraparound LED taillights. The RS version also gets blacked-out lower bumper and sporty inserts too. Talking about the interiors, it is the same story again. The dashboard is straight lifted-off from the City Sedan and as it is the RS version we are seeing - gets all-black interiors. However, Honda doesn't offer the part-digital instrument cluster we get to see in the India-spec City.

Unlike the City Sedan which comes with two engine options, the City Hatch gets only one. The heart of the matter here is the 1.0-litre i-VTEC turbo petrol engine which puts out 122PS and 173 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 7-step CVT and powers the front wheels. Offered in three variants, the RS trims sits above the S+ and SV trim levels. Before you get carried away with the looks of the City Hatch, we must tell you that it measures more than 4 metres - 4345mm to be precise.

On comparison, it is about 200mm shorter than the sedan we get in India but still more than four metres. If Honda plans to launch it in India - which they wouldn't - it will attract huge taxes which take the price much higher than the competition. All the premium hatchbacks we get in India like the Tata Altroz or Hyundai i20 measures under four metres to match taxation benefits. All in all, we can only dream of the 2021 Honda City Hatch!
