2022 HM Contessa is ready to make a comeback in India. The new generation Contessa will embrace a futuristic design along with a possible EV badge.
We presented you the story of the HM Ambassador's comeback to India. Adding to the thrill of the Ambassador's comeback are the latest reports. As per the news reports published recently, the 2022 HM Contessa is also trademarked in India now. The patent for the new Contessa was completed recently. This suggests to us that the iconic Indian sedan is on its way back to the market.
Hindustan Motors is one of the most iconic car makers in India. The facility was set up in coordination with the central government decades ago. HM was known for producing the two most popular Indian sedans. One was the Ambassador, which lived for a long duration; the second was Contessa. HM produced Contessa as a more luxurious & executive option from 1984-to 2002.
With time HM's financial debts led to a complete shut down of company operations. Surprisingly, HM has managed to get over the debts & also procured a joint venture with PSA (Peugeot group) recently. Thanking the new JV, HM is back on its track. As per the reports, HM is already in the final stages of engine design as well as the mechanicals for the upcoming Contessa. The Contessa name has been patented recently in India by HM to make sure the legacy of the car reforms.
While the new joint venture is primarily focused on manufacturing EVs. As reported earlier by us, the Ambassador is also suspected to come back as an electric car. But contrary to this, the upcoming Contessa will initially come with an ICE powertrain. This means that a new petrol engine is already under development. Also, as per the company director, the upcoming Ambassador may receive the ICE powertrain initially.
Nevertheless, the launch of both the iconic cars is still far away; maybe sometime in 2024.
