Toyota and Suzuki entered into a joint venture to jointly manufacture and develop new products for the Indian as well as the global markets. Under this JV, the two brands are currently developing their first product together. This new product will be a mid-size SUV that will take on the rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and others. Internally codenamed the Toyota D22 SUV, this vehicle will go on sale later this year. Here are the top five things to know about the upcoming 2022 Toyota D22 mid-size SUV.
DNGA Platform
This new Creta rival will be based on the new global DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform and will offer an impressive mechanical setup. Expected Launch
While we still are awaiting official details about the launch, we do expect the two Japanese car brands to launch the SUVs in the second half of 2022, during the festive season near Diwali. Once launched, the D22 will rival the cars like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and the MG Astor.

A hybrid powertrain is expected to be offered with the upcoming D22 SUV in India. While we still are awaiting more details and the specs, the SUV is expected to be offered with either 1.5-L petrol or a 1.4-L turbo petrol engine. Hybrid engines are now slowly becoming popular in the market, all thanks to cleaner emissions and increased fuel efficiency.
To Be Manufactured By Toyota
The D22 will be the first car in the JV to be manufactured by Toyota in India. The D22 and the Maruti SUV (codenamed as Maruti YFG) will be manufactured at the Toyota's Bidadi plant. The Bidadi plant will be used as a production hub for this SUV for domestic and export markets.
