Chennai-based CV maker has hinted towards the set up of a separate production plant aimed only for Ashok Leyland EVs. Read all the details in our story.
Ashok Leyland has established itself as a well-known and reliable commercial vehicle brand in the domestic market. To further expand this brand value and trust among customers, an expansion drive is on its way. Recently hinted by the management itself, a separate Ashok Leyland Electric Vehicle production plant might soon be established.
The main aim of the commercial vehicle manufacturer is to establish new engine options which include CNG, hydrogen fuel, and most importantly the EV segment. It is a well-known fact that the EV market has considerably expanded over in the recent period. A lot of new customers have now started opting for EV models globally. Assessing this potential change in the domestic market as well, Ashok Leyland is readying itself for production deviation towards the EV sector.
In a recent media interaction, the management clarified that the domestic and global market potential for the EV segment has pushed them towards finding a suitable facility space. This means the management is already on its spree of finding a new production facility space that shall be used only for the present and upcoming EV models.

Talking of the EV models, Ashok Leyland has already invested a handsome sum of Rs 1,500 Crores to develop new EV designs and models along with its UK-based EV partner Switch Mobility. The aim is clear; to develop newer EV models based on 'Dost & Bada Dost' LCV models aimed towards the domestic as well as SAARC markets.
Apart from this investment, Ashok Leyland has also invested Rs 500 Crores to develop new engine options that shall be based on the bi-fuel options such as CNG and hydrogen fuel. These newer generation models are also being developed along with the Switch Mobility unit. Ashok Leyland has already been setting up a new production as well as an R&D facility in Spain that will cater to the European as well as global markets. Hence, a new facility based on EV only isn't out of the box for the CV maker.
