BMW 5 Series hybrid is the most selling hybrid range of BMW in the world. BMW has been selling 'e' incarnations of the 5 Series for quite some time now and now we have 5 incarnations of the same - 3 sedans and 2 touring models. The newly revealed BMW 545e xDrive is the fastest among all as it is powered by a 3.0-litre inline-6 instead of a 2.0 four-pot unit. Despite being the fastest PHEV from BMW now, it returns a converted fuel economy of 47 km/l. Now that's impressive!
BMW recently unveiled the new 5 Series facelift and then we saw the M5 facelift and now 545e xDrive. All the mentioned models draw their design cues from the facelifted 5 Series and sport same features as well. The 545e xDrive basically employs the same powertrain we get in the 745Le xDrive. Powering the BMW 545e xDrive is a 3.0-litre inline-6 turbo petrol engine which is coupled with an electric motor.

The engine alone produces 286hp and the electric motor churns out 109hp, combined, the overall output is 394hp and 600 Nm of torque. The 12 kWh battery pack offers a pure electric range of 54-57 km and you can achieve a top speed of 140 km/h in full electric mode. Chuck the gear lever in sports mode and then it will do 0-100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The time is achievable thanks to the amazing xDrive system of BMW. The car will automatically shift to full-electric mode if it enters a low emission area - fret not, we do not have these in India.
The 545e xDrive comes with various modes and the car starts in Hybrid mode. Double pressing the Hybrid mode will get you into the Hybrid Eco Pro which is more emphasised towards electric propulsion and aggressive regenerative braking. As the name suggests, the Hybrid Eco Pro mode is all for efficiency and relaxed driving. As the 545e is PHEV, you can charge it at public charging stations and BMW's navigation will find compatible charging stations for you.

You may ask. will it come to India? As of now, BMW has not given a word on its launch, but there are big chances of it. As we already have the 745Le xDrive in the Indian market, BMW can launch the 545e xDrive in India too. However, the 745Le is the most expensive 7 Series model in India right now, similarly, the 545Le will also cost much more than its ICE counterparts. Currently, BMW sells the 520d, 530i and 530d models of the 5 Series along with the lunatic M5 Competition.
