After several months, finally, we have got some good news related to the Indian Automotive Industry. Since the past few months, due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic and the nationwide lockdown, the industries had to incur huge losses. But now, things are getting back to normal, though new normal. In the last few months, we have witnessed some great car launches like the new Hyundai Creta, new Verna, new-gen Honda City, Tata Harrier, MG Hector Plus, etc., etc. It is because of these new launches, the car sales are improving and they are expected to improve even further in the coming months. Today, we list for you the figures of the Car Sales of August 2020.
Car Sales August 2020
Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the largest car manufacturer in the country. This Indo-Japanese carmaker always tops the sales chart and in August this year, the company has sold 1,13,000 vehicles in the Indian market. This is a very healthy sales figure and the carmaker has posted around 21 per cent YoY growth. For reference, in August 2019, the Maruti Suzuki sold 93,173 cars in the country. Maruti's entry-level small cars like the Alto 800 and S-Presso registered massive growth. The hatchbacks like the Swift, WagonR, Baleno, etc. and the utility vehicles like the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, etc. also sold in good numbers.
Hyundai
Next, we have the Hyundai Motor India Private Limited. Hyundai is now considered as the UV-king of India as it has great dominance in the utility vehicle segment. Thanks to the new Creta, Venue and the Kona EV and Tucson, its sales are improving every month. In August 2020, Hyundai sold 45,809 units in the Indian market. Hyundai has registered 20 per cent YoY growth as in August 2019, the carmaker sold just 38,205 units in the country. Hyundai's good sales figures can be mostly attributed to the new 2020 Creta, new Verna, Venue, Grand i10 Nios, Aura and the Tucson SUV.
Tata Motors
After a very long time, Tata Motors has registered growth in sales and not just by a per cent or two, this Indian carmaker has posted a massive growth. In August 2020, Tata Motors sold 18,583 units of vehicles. In the same period last year, the company sold just 7,316 units. This translates to a whopping 154 per cent YoY growth and that's a commendable job and really worth appreciating. In fact, it is Tata Motors' highest sale figures in nearly the past 2.5 years. The best-selling Tata Motors cars are the Tiago, Nexon, Altroz, etc. The Harrier is also in good demand and we believe Tata's sales with further improve significantly, thanks to the new Nexon XM+ S which gets a sunroof.
Mahindra
This Indian Utility Vehicle manufacturer has also registered positive growth in passenger vehicles sales. Mahindra and Mahindra have sold 13,651 units of vehicles in the month of August 2020. This is a 4 per cent YoY growth compared to the same period last year. In August 2019, the carmaker has sold 13,147 units. Mahindra's Indian portfolio includes some great SUVs like the XUV300, XUV500, Scorpio, Alturas G4, etc. Also, Mahindra has recently revealed the new-generation Thar and we believe it will sell like hotcakes.
Kia Motors
Kia Motors is one of the most successful automakers of recent times. Since its launch in August 2019, the Seltos has been setting the sales chart on fire. The Carnival Premium MPV also sells in good numbers. This month Kia will launch the Sonet compact-SUV on 18th September. Post the launch of the Sonet, Kia's sales chart will further improve significantly. In August 2020, Kia sold 10,853 units while in August 2019, this South Korean carmaker sold 6,236 units and that was its debut month. This translates to a whopping 74 per cent YoY growth, which is actually worth appreciating.
Renault
Renault is another such carmaker which is performing very well in recent times in the Indian market. This French carmaker's affordable Kwid micro hatchback, Duster SUV and Triber seven-seater MPV sells in very good numbers. In August 2020, Renault sold 8,060 units of vehicles while in the same period last year, the carmaker sold 5,704 units. This translates to 41 per cent YoY growth in car sales. Renault will soon also launch the Kiger compact SUV in the Indian market.
Honda
Honda Cars India has had a very busy 2020 so far. With the BS6 transition, this Japanese car manufacturer has given all their products some subtle or comprehensive upgrades. In the past few months, Honda launched the new-generation City, new Jazz Facelift, WR-V Facelift, Civic Diesel, etc. It is because of these new cars that Honda has registered 39 per cent MoM growth. However, on a YoY basis, the carmaker has registered degrowth of 9 per cent. In August 2020, Honda sold 7,509 units while in August 2019, the carmaker sold 8,291 units.
Toyota
Toyota's sales though have improved compared to July 2020, the YoY growth is still in negative. In August 2020, this Japanese car manufacturer sold 5,555 units while in August 2019, Toyota has sold 10,701 units of vehicles. This translates to solid degrowth of 48 per cent on a YoY basis. Toyota's Indian portfolio includes Glanza, Innova Crysta, Fortuner, Camry, etc. Very soon Toyota will also launch the Urban Cruiser compact-SUV and the Fortuner Facelift. These new products might boost the sales of Toyota India.

Ford
Ford India has sold 4,731 units in the month of August 2020. In the same period last year, this American car manufacturer sold 5,517 units. This translates to degrowth of 14 per cent on a YoY basis. However, when we compare these figures with July 2020, there is a 20 per cent MoM growth. Ford has recently launched the new Freestyle Flair Edition and will soon launch the Figo AT and the Endeavour Sport Edition. These new upcoming Ford cars will boost the sales of the company in the coming months.
MG Motors
Morris Garages made its Indian debut last year with the Hector. Recently, the company also launched the new Hector Plus six-seater SUV. Thanks to these Hector duo, the carmaker has registered massive growth in sales this month. In August 2020, MG Motors sold 2,851 units while in August 2019, the carmaker sold 2,018 units and this translates to solid growth of 41 per cent on a YoY basis. MG will soon also launch its flagship Gloster SUV.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen has sold 1,470 units in August 2020. However, the carmaker has registered degrowth in sales both on MoM basis and YoY basis. In August last year, Volkswagen sold 2,306 units. The German car manufacturer has recently launched the new Polo and Vento. Also, bookings for the new Vento AT and the Polo AT are now open in India.
Skoda
Skoda India Private Limited has sold 1,003 units of vehicles in August 2020. The Czech car manufacturer has registered 9 per cent growth on an MoM basis. However, on a YoY basis, the carmaker has registered degrowth of 14 per cent. In August 2019, Skoda sold 1,164 units in the Indian market. Recently, Skoda has launched the new Rapid, Superb and Karoq SUV in the Indian market and all of them are receiving good response in the market.
Nissan
Nissan has sold 800 units in the month of August 2020 in the Indian market. The Japanese car manufacturer has registered massive degrowth of 43 per cent on a YoY basis. In August 2019, Nissan sold 1,413 units of vehicles. Recently, Nissan has launched the new Nissan Kicks with a very powerful turbocharged petrol engine. The company is also gearing up to launch the new Nissan Magnite compact SUV in the Indian market very soon.
Fiat (Jeep)
Fiat India or rather say Jeep India has sold 468 units of vehicles in the Indian market. The company has registered 17 per cent growth on an MoM basis, however, on a YoY basis, Jeep India has registered degrowth of 23 per cent. In August 2019, Jeep has sold 609 units of vehicles in the Indian market. Jeep sells very few products in the Indian market and its only mass-market product is the Jeep Compass. Jeep is also planning to launch several new products in the Indian market in the coming years to boost its sales.
