Delhi Bans Ola, Uber, Rapido Bike Taxis; Says Illegal

Ride-sharing aggregators such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido have been served a notice by the Delhi Transport Authority. The notice instructed them to immediately stop their services of a 2-wheeler taxi in the capital. It cited that the operations are illegal. This comes after the Supreme Court declined to quash the order passed by the Bombay High Court against Rapido, to stop their bike taxi services in Bombay.

Service notice to the aggregators, DTA says that the operation of white number plates for ferrying passengers is a gross violation of the Motors Vehicle Act 1988. The transport department cited this to be an absolute commercial operation.

The notice further mentions a fine of Rs. 5,000 for the first offense and then 10,000 and imprisonment for subsequent offenses. The Driver's license is going to be suspended for a term of 3 years. In case of repeated conviction.

Aggregators like Ola, Uber, Rapido, and any other digital platform, for instance, will be fined 1,00,000 lakh. If found violating rules, the actions will be taken under Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

Why Declared Illegal

According to the rules, white registration number plates cannot be used for commercial operations. For the vehicle o be used as a taxi, a yellow number plate is to be obtained from the Transport Authority. This is the backdrop of the imposed ban in the city.

VERDICT- The move by the Transport Authority is inspired by the rules laid down by the Motor Vehicle Act, of 1988. Also, the Supreme Court order played a pivotal role. With the operations shut, and heavy fines imposed, the aggregators, riders, and drivers are going to find it really difficult to come to any alternate solution.
