Just recently Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a draft which said every car in India should be sold with dual-front airbags. Yes, even today the dual airbags are not a standard feature in the Indian markets. To keep the costs in check, only the driver side airbag comes as standard in small hatchbacks.
Before we go any further and explain to you about this new draft which says a car should have dual-front airbags, make sure you are a member of our exclusive 91Wheels Telegram group where we bring you all the latest information related to the Indian Automotive Industry.
The driver-side airbag should be mandatory for all cars according to the AIS (automotive industry standard) and because of this certain carmakers played really well. The carmakers who provide budget-friendly vehicles regulated this rule by just providing driver-side airbag to keep the production cost in check. For those seeking a co-passenger airbag had to pay a premium over the standard version.

However, this will change soon and dual-airbags will come as standard across all cars. Please note that carmakers charge a premium of Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 for the co-drivers airbags which does not impress the budget buyers.
The entry-level of Renault Kwid, Maruti 800, S-Presso, WagonR, Celerio, Datsun Redi GO and Hyundai Santro gets driver-side airbag only. For the optional airbag which is a safety feature as it saves the passenger during an accident is charged as premium from the buyers.
