With the Bharat Emission Stage 6 norms implemented a few years back for passenger vehicles, the authorities did realise the need for drafting emission norms for commercial vehicle lineups as well. The emission norms for commercial vehicles and agricultural equipments are dealt separately when compared to passenger vehicles. Therefore, the new emission norms for tractors were drafted in October 2021. These norms would now come into force by April 2022.
The Tractor Emission norms currently applicable were last implemented in April 2010/ 2021 and now it has become the need of the hour to revise them . The revised tractor emission norms would be applicable on tractors for a power output of more than 50 HP and would be applicable from April 2022. The tractors falling in the category of sub 50 HP power output would be governed by TREM IIIA norms as per Integrated Risk Control Applications Pvt. Ltd. (IRCA).
As per the authorities, the Indian homelands fall in the category of medium to high horsepower demand market. Thus, nearly 80% sales of tractors are driven in the segment of 30 to 50 HP power. As the revised emission norms would be applicable only on the tractors with an output of more than 50 HP, this would affect just 10 per cent of the entire volume of sales.

On the technological front, India is ready for this transition as agricultural equipment manufacturers exports made in India equipment which fulfil most of the emission requirements as per the evolution. Moreover, the gap of drafting the norms and implementing them has given a significant preparation time to the companies to adapt to the futuristic technologies involved.
As per the statistics, this emission norms enforcement would lead to an increased use of advanced equipment to control emissions which may increase the production costs slightly by 6 per cent to 8 per cent and would eventually be pushed on by the OEMs to the customer. In this process, OEMs would actively invest in realigning their vehicle portfolio by offering tractors with a high torque at lower power figures.
This was a much necessary step as India lags behind the advancement in emission norms for non-road vehicle category when compared to highly developed countries. These norms were always left behind and a liberal policy was followed.
