Delhites Rejoice As EV Charging Becomes Free From June 1 But Here's The Catch!

With an increased focus on environmentally safe mobility, the government has provided certain benefits to the public to switch to electric mobility in case of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, and these schemes seem to have worked quite efficiently as the National Capital Region of Delhi saw a sale of more than 10 thousand electric vehicles registered till date from the start of 2022. To further promote this agenda, EV charging becomes free for the people of Delhi from 12 noon to 3 PM.

This free charging facility would be available at more than 40 public electric vehicle charging stations in the national capital region. Some of the charging stations which will be providing this benefit would be based in South Extension, Bikaji Cama Place, Punjabi Bagh, Greater Kailash, Preet Vihar, Defence Colony, Netaji Subhash Place, Nelson Mandela Road, Shalimar Bagh, Mayur Vihar, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Rohini, Saket, Green Park and South Campus. The charging stations operated by the EV charging startup ElectriVa would be providing free charging at the above-mentioned locations in partnership with the civic bodies.

As per the officials, this move would further promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the city as this would eliminate any worries for EV owners with regard to range anxiety and be left stranded. As it is, electric vehicles incur a much less running cost when compared to their internal combustion engine counterpart.

Additionally, out of the mentioned three-hour bracket, the public would be offered the charging facility at subsidised prices of Rs. 10 per unit charge. This move to incentivise the entire EV charging infrastructure would lead to much faster adoption of electric vehicles but can pose a threat to electric resources as well! As the electric load increases, the electrical infrastructure would demand a significant upgrade in terms of consumption and the grids can also face major failures during the peak load consumption hours. As per the statistics in many developed countries, significant investments have been made to stabilise the electricity supply infrastructure and they have also put a special impetus on strengthening public charging so that people charge the EVs only at public chargers.

Even though battery swapping stations can resolve such problems but they have their own set of challenges. Thus, a targeted approach is to be followed. This scheme for free EV charging would be available for both private and commercial electric vehicles. The Delhi government also aims to increase the number of charging points to 500 by the end of June 2022.
