If you are a 4x4 enthusiast, this is probably the best time to make use of your SUV when it comes to snow driving here in India. The Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir are white with enough snowed out roads to satisfy your hunger for a white escape. The routes will remain so for the next two months or so. How much fun can you have on such roads? Well, this video of a snow drive in Himachal from our reader Aman shows just that.
Aman has been undertaking such snow trips for the past few trips and this time around used his Ford Endeavour. This is top end 3.2 Titanium trim that comes with 4x4 and as seen above, makes it look so easy. However, do note that you need to have ample experience to drive on such roads. Further, Aman brought along snow chains that were used across all the four wheels. The tyres themselves were upgraded to Yokohama Geolander ATS G015 a while back. At places, the amount of snow forces him to reverse up and move ahead with momentum and in-process, plough through feet of fresh snow.
The route for this snow drive in Himachal was from Theog to Narkanda. Theog is about 20-25km ahead of Shimla and at an altitude of 7500 feet, the place gets ample snowfall from January to March. Narkanda is situated even higher and cuts from the rest of the world when the weather turns crazy. The narrow state road from Narkanda' main town, towards Baggi / Sungri is a favourite spot for snow hunters. SUVs like this one not only end up reaching the town, but also explore the roads ahead that look right out of the Ice Age. As this was fresh snow, grip levels weren't down to zero which can otherwise render even snow chains useless.
If you are planning to undertake such a trip, please make sure you understand the situation first. For tips and how to go about it, do read this exhaustive article by TyrePlex. Snow chains come very handy though you can do reasonably good if the snow is soft enough and hasn't been flattened into ice by passing cars. Always keep tools handy and do no try challenging Mother Nature or pushing the car's limits. Drive safe and enjoy!
