Hindustan Ambassador to make a comeback under Citroen brand

Hindustan Ambassador, the iconic car that was on sale in India until six years ago is all set to make a comeback. The Ambassador was on sale for around five decades and became one of the cars on sale in the market for the longest period. The Ambassador created an international image and became extremely popular around the world. With the rising competition, the Ambassador sedan was discontinued from the market. PSA Peugeot, which is planning to enter the Indian market in the coming time bought the rights to the iconic name and paid a whopping Rs 80 crore for it.

Hindustan Ambassador

Most Indians thought that the Ambassador brand will not make a comeback to the Indian market and the name will remain in the memories of millions. However, the French manufacturer will soon enter the already crowded automobile sector of India. Since there is a slow down in the overall sales of the industry, PSA will have to bring in something unique to catch the attention of the Indian market. What better can be than bringing back the iconic name of Ambassador to the streets of India.

Before making any assumptions, the new Citroen car will not be anything like the Hindustan Ambassador that remained on sale almost unchanged throughout its life in the Indian market. It will be a modern incarnation of the sedan and will be launched in the same sedan form.

According to OD, the all-new car will be based on the Citroen C-Elysee, which is currently available in the international markets and is manufactured in Spain and China. The same platform will form the base of the upcoming Ambassador sedan, which will be launched by the brand in the Indian market in the coming years.

The C-Elysee is a mid-size sedan that will take on the likes of Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz if launched in the Indian market. The car itself looks like a classic car, which will remind people of the Ambassador. It looks sleeker and will offer a modern list of equipment and engine.

Powering the car will be a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that develops 72 Bhp. Citroen may launch the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine too, which generates a maximum of 115 Bhp.
