Honda Establishes EV Battery Sharing Service in India

Dubbed Honda Mobile Power Pack e:, one can exchange a near-empty portable battery with a fully charged unit and avoid downtime

Merely a month after Honda Motor Co. revealed its plans of launching an EV battery sharing service in India, Honda Power Pack Energy India Private Limited, the Japanese automaker's new subsidiary for battery sharing service, has officially been established in the country. With this, Honda will now offer a battery sharing service to aid electric mobility through small vehicles, which should, in turn, accelerate the EV adoption trend.

Through its service, Honda Power Pack Energy India Private Ltd aims to solve three issues faced by EV users - Long Charging Duration, High Cost of Battery and Limited Range. The company plans to start its operations with electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws) in the first half of next year. Initially, its services will be available only in Bengaluru. However, it will venture into other major cities of the country in a phase-wise manner.

Users of Hondas battery sharing service can swap batteries at strategically located battery swapping stations. Dubbed Honda Mobile Power Pack e:, one can exchange a near-empty portable battery with a fully charged unit and avoid downtime by not being required to wait for charging and getting back on the road.

Additionally, the new subsidiary of Honda will work closely with the vehicle OEMs that wish to integrate Honda's batteries into their offerings by providing them with the required technical information. Through this, the company wishes to further enhance the service convenience offered by swappable EV batteries. The Honda Mobile Power Pack e: will be produced in India.

Speaking on his company's plans, Minoru Kato, Chief Officer, Life Creation Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. earlier said,Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP) has huge potential to electrify all kinds of devices including small-sized mobility products and expand the use of renewable energy. By offering a battery sharing service in India, Honda will contribute to the accelerated electrification of rickshaws and expanded use of renewable energy. Moreover, Honda will continue serving people worldwide with the joy of expanding their lifes potential by further expanding the utilization of the MPP into broader areas.
