Honda India Sign MoU with HPCL, Upcoming Activa-E to get Swappable Batteries

The Honda Activa-E is expected to launch by the end of this year. For further facilitation, the 2-wheeler company teams up with HPCL to set up swappable battery stations across India.

Honda Motor has been working on an electric two-wheeler specifically for the Indian market. The upcoming electric scooter is scheduled for launch by the end of this year (next financial year), and chances are it will be the Honda Activa-E. To add to its momentum, its subsidiary, Honda Power Pack Energy India Private Limited has announced its collaboration with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to set up battery-swapping stations across the country.

These battery-swapping stations will be functional by the first half of 2022, and they will start from Bengaluru, followed by eventual expansion to other major cities. Initially, the stations will cater towards three-wheelers, and the Batter as a Service (BaaS) business will later incorporate two-wheelers as well. This confirms that the Japanese brand nearing its EV launch.

The Activa-E will not be the first two-wheeler from Honda to equip the swappable battery technology. The Benly e electric scooter was the first player in this segment, launched in June 2021, in Japan. The electric delivery scooter for Japan has also been spotted testing in India.

A lot of companies are coming forward with swappable battery technology, and government incentives are further encouraging the scenario. A few days back, Hero also announced its partnership with Bharat Petroleum to set up a nationwide battery swapping infrastructure.

Amongst startups, the Bounce also launched their debut electric scooter called the Infinity E1, which features swappable battery technology. Prices start from Rs. 45,099 onwards (ex-showroom, Delhi).
