The Indian automotive manufacturers have seen a gradual shift of interest from the car buyers from sedans to compact and full-size SUVs. Honda's portfolio has always been overpowered by hatchbacks and sedans for a long. The Honda CRV was one of the SUVs offered in India but wasn't able to fetch decent sales figures when compared to other full-size SUVs. Another product on offer is the Honda WRV, which shares many bits with the fourth generation Honda City in terms of powertrain and design language. As per the reports, Honda Cars India will develop an SUV specifically for the Indian markets. This Honda India-spec new SUV has been confirmed for launch in 2023.

This new SUV is suspected to be a premium compact SUV segment rival between 10 to 20 lakhs, thus might borrow design elements and powertrains from the current generation Honda City on sale. This SUV would be equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity features, a decent sound system, connected car technology features, a sunroof, powered driver seat adjustment, front ventilated seats, automatic climate control and a wireless charger for smartphones.
As the Honda City is currently available with a petrol i-VTEC and a diesel i-DTEC engine, Honda India can also use the powertrain from the Honda City Hybrid. In terms of safety, Honda's SUV is expected to be equipped with plenty of bells and whistles like the Honda City Hybrid and carry forward the ADAS features. They may include six SRS airbags, a Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), both front and rear disk brakes, tyre pressure monitoring systems, automatic emergency braking, lane change and lane-keeping assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic parking brake, emergency stop signal and much more.
This new SUV from Honda is likely to compete with the premium compact SUV segment. Thus, it is likely to lock horns with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. This SUV might also compete with the likes of the MG Astor as well as the Mahindra XUV700 due to the presence of a decent amount of safety kit in a similar segment.
