Hyundai Announces Electrification Plan For India- 6 EVs to Launch by 2028

The upcoming lineup of 6 Electric Vehicles from Hyundai will cater to multiple segments, including mass market and mass premium segments 

Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the country's second highest-selling carmaker and the largest exporter, today announced its electrification plan for the Indian car market. In line with this, the carmaker intends to introduce as many as 6 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in the Indian market by 2028. Furthermore, the company will even come up with a dedicated BEV platform - E-GMP - for the Indian market.

Commenting on the corporate announcement, Mr. S S Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., said, Hyundai has been at the forefront of the electric mobility revolution in India, with the introduction of Indias 1st Electric SUV - KONA Electric in 2019. Hyundai Motor India has been delighting customers with the most innovative and technologically advanced mobility solutions over the last two and a half decades. As we continue to redefine the mobility space, today we are yet again showcasing our commitment towards Indian customers with the announcement of expanding our BEV line-up to 6 vehicles for the Indian Market by 2028. At Hyundai, we are taking experiences Beyond Mobility and are strongly focusing on Intelligent Technology, Sustainability and Innovation. Keeping in line with this thought, we will introduce our dedicated BEV Platform  E-GMP as well as modified platforms for battery electric vehicles in India. By driving the adoption of electric mobility at scale in India, Hyundai will become the fulcrum for the transformation of a brighter and better tomorrow.

Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform ELECTRIC GLOBAL MODULAR PLATFORM (E-GMP)

The Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) made its global debut earlier this month. The new architecture will underpin future electric vehicles from the popular carmaker. Thanks to its scalable nature, the platform will go on to form the base for many types of vehicles. Meanwhile, the clever cabin packaging will lead to a space-efficient cockpit, flat floor and flexible seating layouts. E-GMP has been designed based on 4 key pillars -

  • Modularity - The scalable nature of the platform will help it underpin various types of vehicles.
  • Reliability - With a low centre of gravity, usage of Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) and 8-point battery mounting, E-GMP will pave the way to highly reliable BEVs of the future.
  • Usability  The flat floor and flexible seating layout along with a practical cabin that features a sliding console and sliding second-row seats, will add a new dimension of usability
  • Performance - With a large battery capacity of up to 77.4 kWh, 2WD/4WD drivetrain, well-sorted dynamics and a top speed of up to 260 km/h, E-GMP will usher in a new generation of exciting EVs.

In order to cater to the diverse nature of the Indian car market, the upcoming range of Battery Electric Vehicles from Hyundai will comprise vehicles from different segments, including mass-market and mass premium market offerings. These EVs will have various body styles, including SUVs.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd is also working on setting up a BEV infrastructure to help with the quicker widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the country. In line with this, the carmaker will develop a customer-centric BEV charting infrastructure with a high focus on -

  • Charging Facility at Authorized Dealerships
  • 24X7 Road Side Assistance
