Impact of mileage (odometer reading) on the resale value of an old car

Cars with low mileage (odometer reading) do command a higher resale value than those with high mileage. If the condition of the used car with high mileage is better with proper service record than those cars with low mileage but irregular service record, the former has the possibility of a higher resale value.

In India, the aspect of mileage (odometer reading) is something which decides the resale value of the car to a huge extent. Depending on how much kilometres the car has clocked in its period of usage decides for how much will it sell the more the number of kilometres it has covered, the lesser will be the mileage.

However, thats not all true. While there is no denying fact that a car with high mileage demands more maintenance, but at the time of resale, it is the history of servicing and wear and tear of the parts which decide the actual health of the car.

Say, for example, if the car has clocked only 30,000 kms at the time of selling but hasnt been subjected to proper servicing at the scheduled periods, it will be less healthy than the car which has covered almost 1 lakh kms but has been serviced time to time, with all the proper replacements of the worn parts and components as and when required.

Merits of buying a car with low mileage (odometer reading)
Since the car has been driven much lesser, its possibility of using for a longer duration of time till your next upgrade increases, with much life still intact in its mechanicals.

Since cars with low mileage have good resale value at the start, you will still have much authority in asking for a respectable amount at the time when you yourself will sell the car in future.

Demerits of buying a car with low mileage (odometer reading)

Even if the car has been driven less, if it is quite old, the overall warranty of the car will replenish sooner than expected.

If a vehicle has low mileage but is quite old, chances are that it has not driven much consistently, and as a result, some of its parts have not worn out uniformly. There might be circumstances when such parts might breakdown unexpectedly, so check for the crucial areas properly before buying a used car.
