Indian Government's Firm Stance: No Room For Driverless Cars—Here's Why

What's Behind India's Decision to Restrict Driverless Cars?

Nitin Gadkari stressed, I will never allow driverless cars to come into India because it will take away the jobs of several drivers and I will not let that happen. Elon Musk has been steering Tesla on a distinctive journey into the world of self-driving cars, showcasing a bold vision and ambitious innovations. This comes at a time when Tesla is eyeing entry into the rapidly growing Indian automotive market. Musk's leadership has infused Tesla's approach with a unique blend of foresight and daring experimentation.

He raised concerns about how the introduction of driverless cars might impact jobs for drivers nationwide, underlining the potential threat. Additionally, he laid down a condition for Tesla's entry into Indiainsisting that the company set up a manufacturing plant within the country. According to him, relying on manufacturing in China and importing into India was deemed impractical.

Gadkari has been quite clear about his reservations regarding driverless cars, voicing them not just once, but twice  first in July 2017 and then in December 2019.
