Indias First AI-Enabled Cameras Installed On Mumbai Pune Expressway

The Mumbai Pune Expressway is one of the busiest expressways in the country and SaveLIFE Foundation is now conducting a safety drive across the expressway under the Zero Fatality Corridor initiative. In the due process, AI driving technology will be used to identify drivers using mobile phones while driving. For this, the organisation has set up Indias First AI-Enabled Cameras on the Mumbai Pune Expressway. The cameras will now not only detect and highlight over-speeding vehicle but will now also deduct people driving a vehicle without the hands on the steering wheel or while using mobile phones while driving. All these instances will now be treated as an offence.

Indias First AI-Enabled Cameras

The smart cameras are equipped with artificial intelligence technology and are intelligent enough to understand when the driver does not have the hands on the steering wheel. The cameras will be operated and installed in partnership with Maharashtra Police, MSRDC and Ador India. With the installation of these cameras, the Mumbai-Pune expressway has become the first expressway in India to have AI-enabled cameras. This system has been named as - three-lane vehicle activated speed-sign System (VASS).

The cameras not only detect the speeds of the oncoming vehicle but in addition to this, also flashes back to the driver to make him/her aware of the violation. This will help the driver take necessary action or reduce the speed of the vehicle. SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF) happens to be a non-profit, non-government organization which aims at improving road safety in the country. The organisation is also working on enhancing the emergency medical facilities across the highways in India.

It is now a widely known fact that distracted driving is a major cause of accidents on highways. Using mobile phones while driving can also distract the driver and may lead to a major accident. A Zero Fatality Corridor initiative too has been undertaken by SafeLIFE Foundation across this expressway which detects the speed of oncoming vehicles and flashes back to make the driver aware of the fact that he/she is overspeeding.
