Kia debuted in the Indian market in 2019 with the launch of Seltos mid-size SUV. Fast forward to 2023, the Korean brand has not looked back since then and currently ranks among the top 5 manufacturers in the country. All thanks to its aggressive product strategy and support from its sister brand Hyundai, Kia India enjoys the sheer popularity of its vehicles and some of the models command a very high waiting period. Kia Carens CNG And Sonet CNG: What Was On Cards?
Earlier it was speculated that the CNG-powered versions of Carens and Sonet are in the works and will launch in 2023. We also came across some spy images of a test mule of Sonet CNG undergoing road tests with the emission testing kit on board. Furthermore, it was believed that the Sonet CNG will be powered by the 1.0-litre tGDi petrol engine. A similar narrative was doing rounds for CNG-powered Carens wherein it was said that it will draw power from the turbo petrol engine.
CNG-Powered Kia Models: Will These Models Ever Launch? By When? Kia's Plans Discussed
If some media reports are to be believed, Kia India has no intentions of introducing CNG-powered vehicles in its line-up as of now. This means that Kia Carens CNG and Sonet CNG will not launch anytime soon in the Indian market. Moreover, the Korean brand has reportedly stated that strong hybrid powertrain options are also not under consideration. So Kia currently sells petrol and diesel-powered vehicles in the Indian market along with a premium segment EV. The company is actively working towards introducing a mass-market EV for the country, specifically an electric SUV to rival the likes of the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 EV.
Talking about highly anticipated CNG vehicles, it seems that their imminent launch plan in 2023 has been put to sleep and Kia may be waiting for the right time to do so.

Verdict: Sonet CNG and Carens CNG would have been a good addition to Kia's portfolio and they could have taken some share from the sales of the Maruti Suzuki CNG stable. However, there are still slim chances that these CNG-powered vehicles may be ready and the company may launch them, depending on the market demand.
