KTM 390 SMC R: Details

KTM 390 SMC R

The 390 SMC R has a design that will make people think more of an dirt bike, which can happen considering that the supermoto is not a very common type of motorcycle seen on Indian roads. This bike feature slim and sleek proportions, along with a tall stance and a front beak, typical of a dirt bike. The presence of a headlamp and a tail light help it in differentiating it as a road-legal supermoto rather than a track-only dirt bike.

Based on the same platform as the 390 Adventure, the 390 SMC R sits on a two-piece construction, consisting of a steel trellis main frame and a pressure die-cast aluminium subframe. This frame is suspended on 43mm WP USD open cartridge forks with 230mm of travel, compression and rebound adjustability.

The rear is suspended on a WP Apex separate function monoshock with preload and rebound adjustability, along with 230mm of travel. There is also a gravity die-cast swingarm made specifically for this motorcycle. If Bajaj decides to launch this bike here, it remains to be seen whether the India-spec model will receive adjustable suspension or not.

As for the braking setup, this bike makes use of a 320mm front disc with radially-mounted dual-piston callipers, along with a 240mm disc with a single-piston ByBre floating calliper at the rear.

Unlike the 390 Adventure, the SMC R makes use of 17-inch wheels with spoke rims on both ends, and it also gets a 9-litre fuel tank, which is significantly smaller. KTM says the 390 SMC R tips the scales at 154kg, and that's without fuel.

Powering the 390 SMC R is the same 399cc, liquid-cooled powertrain from the 390 Duke, producing 44.2bhp and 39Nm of torque, while paired to a 6-speed gearbox and it also gets a slipper clutch.

In terms of equipment, the 390 SMC R comes with a 4.2-inch TFT screen, with feature such as turn-by-turn navigation, call/SMS alerts, and music streaming. It also gets three riding modes, and dual-channel ABS with a Supermoto mode.

Verdict

The 390 SMC R may not immediately be on the cards for an Indian launch. However, the bikemaker is confirmed to launch the 390 Adventure S and the 390 Enduro R very soon. The 390 SMC R could be a unique introduction to the supermoto category for buyers in the sub-400cc class.
