Maruti Suzuki axed out their diesel cars just before the newer BS6 emission norms hit the country on April 1, 2020. Now, new reports suggest that Maruti is planning to launch the 1.5L diesel soon into the Indian markets and it may happen with XL6 first in 2022.
Yes, the in-house 1.5L DDiS diesel unit will first be launched in the premium offering, XL6 and then we will see the same unit on Ertiga and Vitara Brezza in the latter half of the year. This means that the other cars like Ciaz and S-Cross will also be equipped with a diesel unit.
The 1.5L unit was introduced for a brief amount but the frugal performance it packed was gruesome. Now, the unit will be tuned to BS6 and we believe that the power figures will more or less remain the same. The BS4 1.5L diesel used to churn out 94 bhp with 225 Nm of peak torque. The ARAI certified mileage of Ertiga used to deliver 24.20 kmpl but in BS6 we can expect it to grow by a margin.

Another interesting piece of news is that once the 1.5L diesel unit houses on Maruti cars, the same unit will be sourced to Toyota too. Right now, they have Urban Cruiser that will get the oil burner. We also believe that by later this year, Toyota will bring in a replacement to Yaris that will be known as Belta. This sedan will be a homologation of the popular Ciaz.
When asked about the dates as to when the XL6 diesel will be launched then the officials at Maruti remained tight-lipped. It is because of the pandemic that few of their launches have been delayed. One of them is of the Celerio that has been several times too in the Indian market.
The launch was supposed to happen in April but because of the lockdown, it got delayed and now will finally be launching in September. From the sources, Celerio will carry the same engine options as Wagon R - a 1.0L petrol and a more powerful 1.2L petrol. Both the engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional AMT will be on the offer too.

With the launch of diesel vehicles next year, we can expect that the sales of Brezza, Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6 and S-Cross will surely improve by a huge margin.
