Maruti Suzuki has finally showcased the all-new Jimny in the Indian market. After a long wait, the car was officially unveiled by the manufacturer at the 2020 Auto Expo. However, this does not indicate that the Maruti Jimny will be launched in the Indian market soon. The company is currently gauging the customer response and will launch the car after getting the feedback from the market.
It should be noted that Maruti Suzuki has already discontinued the Gypsy, which was in production for decades. The Gypsy was discontinued after Maruti Suzuki did not invest to update the car according to the new safety and emission compliance in India. The brand has not announced any replacement for the car but the Jimny has a strong chance of coming to the Indian market as a niche product.
The iconic four-generation Maruti Suzuki Jimny is showcased in the Sierra version, which is the more rugged version and gets powered by the same 1.5-litre petrol engine that will power the new Vitara Brezza and is already available with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Ciaz in the Indian market. In the Japanese market, the Jimny is also available with a puny 660cc, petrol engine but that is unlikely to be launched in the Indian market.
Maruti Suzuki has showcased the car at India's largest automobile exhibition to gauge the customer response and is likely to launch the vehicle if they receive enough positive feedback for the vehicle in the market.
The rugged Maruti Suzuki Jimny is based on the ladder chassis and it does not use the leaf springs in the rear axle anymore. The car now rides on coil springs that offer much better ride quality. It gets a 4X4 drive layout that powers all the wheels through Maruti Suzuki's AllGrip technology. In the 4X2 modes, the rear wheels of the car get powered.
On the inside, the Jimny gets a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The dark theme based cabin offers comfortable looking seats.
Maruti Suzuki does not offer any 4X4 vehicle in the Indian market. The Jimny has extremely high demand around the world and Maruti Suzuki may also export the vehicle from India in the future.
