MG Air EV To Be Priced In The Likes Of Tata Tiago EV

MG Motor is eyeing on the affordable EV segment in India. At present the most affordable EV in the country is the Tiago EV and it has created a stir in Indian market. Now, MG is preparing to bring its Air EV in the Indian market, the MG Air EV has been recently spied on test and the launch is expected to happen in 2023. The upcoming MG EV will boast the small size as of the Tiago EV.

The MG Air EV won't be the cheapest EV on the Indian market. In a conversation with a publication, Mr. Rajeev Chaba, President & MD, MG Motor India, reportedly stated, "We don't believe in giving the proposition of the cheapest car in its segment. Our focus rather is on offering good value along with contemporary technologies to our customers."

MG Air will be a locally assembled vehicle and from the local manufacturing MG will be able to keep the pricing low. In order to reduce long-term dependence on imports, it is essential to localise EV components in India, and a locally made battery pack is an excellent place to start.

MG Air EV Specifications

Based on the Wuling Air EV that is offered on the foreign market, the MG Air EV will be a two-door vehicle. There are two variations of the international spec Air EV, one with a limited range and one with a great range. The 17.3 kWh battery pack and 30 kW motor are included with the short-range model. With a 2 kW AC charger, this battery pack can provide a range of up to 200 km and charges in 8.5 hours. The long-range model, on the other hand, has a 30 kW motor and a 26.7 kWh battery pack. The long-range version of this battery pack has a range of up to 300 km and charges in 4 hours using a 6.6 kW AC outlet.

If we talk about the features, the international spec variant gets a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display and a digital instrument cluster. On the safety front, it gets dual front airbags, waterproof battery pack, ABS with ESP and other safety features.

Verdict: Regarding the introduction of the MG Air EV in India, MG has not provided any information. The anticipated cover-breaking date is mid-2023. With the introduction of the MG Air EV, the brand will be able to target the budget EV car market in India.
