Delhi Transport Department recently alerted all the Delhities and the people coming to Delhi in their private vehicles that if their car's windshield doesn't have a colour-coded sticker, then be ready for a fine charged under Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, issued by the department on 04/20/2025. So, what is the significance of these stickers and what do they denote? Let's learn. In the meantime, make sure to join the 91Wheels Whatsapp Channel to never miss out on automotive updates.

What Are These Colour-coded Sticker
These chromium-based hologram stickers indicate the vehicle's fuel type and are part of the High-Security Registration Plates mandate, which was made compulsory for all vehicles in 2019. For petrol and CNG vehicles, the sticker is blue; for diesel, it's orange; and for electric and hybrid cars, it's grey. Now, if you're driving in Delhi without this and are caught by the Traffic Police, the fine could be anywhere between Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000.

While the exact figure isn't confirmed, we assume it to be Rs 5,000, as in 2020 the Delhi Transport Department launched a drive to fine all car owners who hadn't switched from regular number plates to High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), along with these stickers. This is where our assumption comes from.
"The Motor Vehicles (High Security Registration Plates) order, 2018 for displaying colour-coded stickers/third registration mark on the windshield of the vehicle. Non-compliance with the above order will also attract the provisions of Section 192(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988," said the public notice
"The vehicle owners are advised to ensure strict compliance with the aforesaid order," also adds this warning. That said, these stickers are very important as they help the police determine the vehicle's fuel type and are somehow related to government plans to reduce the city's pollution levels. Lastly, the owners won't be able to get a pollution certificate if this sticker is not visible on the windshield, and it applies to every car that's moving in the city, no matter new or old.

Verdict
We hope that this news will add value and will save you from traffic challans. The Transport Department rules are getting stringent with every passing month, as the rates of challans have doubled up, and every week we hear about Govt. future plans that will make driving - especially in the capital - a cautionary task. That said, we as citizens should follow all the rules and never forget the fact that nobody is above the laws. Adios.
