Touchscreens To Result In Lower Safety Rating
Automakers are increasingly equipping cars with additional screens and touch panels to enhance their premium feel and feature set. However, a drawback of touchscreens is that they don't quickly become ingrained in muscle memory. As a response, some car manufacturers are reintroducing physical buttons, albeit in a limited capacity. Physical buttons are advantageous for muscle memory, allowing drivers to operate them without diverting their attention from the road.
The overuse of touchscreens is an industry-wide problem, with almost every vehicle-maker moving key controls onto central touchscreens, obliging drivers to take their eyes off the road and raising the risk of distraction crashes, said Matthew Avery, director of strategic development at Euro NCAP, to the Times.
Certain automakers have begun to integrate all toggle and HVAC controls onto touch panels. However, with the forthcoming regulations, vehicles aiming for the highest safety rating under the new testing guidelines must utilize buttons, dials, or stalks for essential functions such as hazard warning lights, indicators, windscreen wipers, SOS calls, and the horn.

The testing agency has said that they are still in the process of finalizing the testing procedures. Car manufacturers will be notified of any changes made.
Verdict
Given that many carmakers rely on Euro NCAP safety ratings, a drop in star ratings attributed to touchscreen functionality is something they cannot afford.
