The compensation for hit and run victims has been changed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). According to the latest MoRTH notification, if the victim of a hit-and-run case dies, the family would receive a revised compensation of Rs 2 lakh, an eight times increase over the present Rs 25,000 solatium. The compensation for serious injuries, on the other hand, will increase four times, from Rs 12,500 to 50,000. The new compensations will take effect on April 1, 2022, and will be applicable to all Indian roads and highways.

The notification also said, the process of applications for compensation and the release of payment to victims has also been made time-bound. This scheme will supersede the Solatium Scheme, 1989 from 1st April 2022. The scheme will be known as the 'Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022,' according to a notification released by the ministry.
The ministry has developed a mechanism for extensive investigations of road accidents, the Detailed Accident Report (DAR), and its reporting, as well as timetables for various stakeholders for speedy claim payments, as part of the scheme. The government will create a Motor Vehicles Accident Fund to pay victims of hit-and-run accidents and to give medical care to individuals who have been harmed.
According to the most recent government data, India had 3,66,138 road accidents in 2020, resulting in 1,31,714 deaths.
