During Diwali, avoid leaving your car in such open parking lots

At present, four-wheeler parking rates at surface level parking lots are set at Rs 20 per hour, with a daily cap of Rs 100, while two-wheeler parking rates are set at Rs 10. Meanwhile, at multi-level parking surfaces, four-wheelers and two-wheelers currently pay Rs 10 and Rs 5 per hour respectively.

While the NDMC is going ahead with this, many parking lots are also under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which is yet to take a decision on this.

Why The Increase In Parking Rates?

As air quality levels in Delhi have dropped to 'very poor' in the recent days, such a step is being taken. As such, the government has decided to activate Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes restrictions on the use of coal and firewood at public eateries, and also a ban on diesel generators, barring essential services.

A similar strategy was adopted last year due to a drop in air quality levels in the city. The NDMC is hoping these steps will help counter the issue of pollution and extreme traffic congestion in the city.

Verdict

The increase in parking rates will affect both four-wheeler and two-wheeler users in the city, and this move may encourage a few to switch to public transport temporarily, especially with the oncoming winter season, in which the National Capital tends to have higher pollution levels due to smog.
