The buyers today are shifting towards SUV segment and the recent sales trends support this claim. While there are a number of SUVs available in the Indian market, the mid-size SUV segment still remains one of the highest-selling segment in the market, all thanks to the cars like the new Creta and the Kia Seltos. With this being said, as per the recent reports which surfaced online, Maruti and Toyota are said to be starting with the development of a new SUV. The brands are working on this new Maruti-Toyota SUV to rival Creta/Seltos as these remain the segment leader in terms of overall sales figures.
The new Creta rivals will be developed by both the brands and are expected to be manufactured by Toyota India. The upcoming SUV will be underpinned by Toyota-Daihatsu's DNGA modular platform and will be designed for emerging markets. The same platform is also seen on the recently launched Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize in Japan. The length of this new vehicle is expected to be close to 4.3. For comparison, the Hyundai Creta measures 4270 mm while the Kia Seltos measures 4315 mm in length.

Moving to the design of the new SUVs, both the models launched by Maruti and Toyota respectively will have a different design but will be sharing all other underpinnings and mechanical components. The styling of these SUVs will be similar to the respective manufacturer's templates. For those who are wondering, both these vehicles are expected to offer slightly different interior and dashboard look to differentiate these from each other. While there is still no confirmation about the engine options on offer, we do expect this new SUV to be powered by the 1.5-L petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech which is also seen on the Ertiga and the S-Cross. This engine will come mated to a manual gearbox but the buyers will also have a choice to opt for the optional automatic gearbox as well.
This new Maruti-Toyota SUV to rival Creta/Seltos is expected to be a premium product for both the carmakers and we do expect Maruti to retail it from its upmarket Nexa outlets.
