Update On 15/04/2021 - India laws are getting stricter day by day and the recent inclusion is in the motor transport department. If you have your car with a temporary registration plate then it will be considered illegal if you are driving on the Indian roads.

The Central Government keeps bringing amendments in the Motor Vehicles Rules of India. If you remember a few months ago, the Government brought changes in the Motor Vehicles Act of India. As a result of that, huge fines and penalties were levied on the citizens for breaking the traffic rules. For over a month, huge fines and penalties were doing the rounds on the news channels and the internet. Even new records of charging fines were being created by the cops of various states. This time it is not about fines for breaking the traffic rules. But, the Government has now introduced New Rules for Temporary Registration Number of New Vehicles in India.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India has notified a comprehensive norm for registration of new vehicles. According to the notification, driving a new vehicle with a temporary registration number printed on a piece of paper and pasted on the vehicle is now illegal. It will be considered an offence. The Government has notified an extensive norm related to the colour code for alphanumeric details embossed on the number plate.

The notification also mentions about the background colour used for displaying the registration number of 11 categories of vehicles. The two new inclusions in the list are vehicles with temporary number plates and also the vehicles which are in possession of the automobile dealerships. These changes have been made under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). According to the law, it is now prohibited to use any alphabet except capital letters in English and Arabic numerals on the number plate.

Now such lines cannot be written on Number Plates

According to the issued notification, nothing else must be written on the number plate. As we all know, we Indians love to write our name / caste / our social status, etc., etc., on the number plate, but now it is prohibited. It is also illegal if any motor vehicle displays registration details in small letters or in regional languages. An official statement also said that even the VIP registration numbers auctioned by the state governments must comply with these new norms.

It is very difficult to read temporary registration numbers written on a piece of paper and also it can be removed and replaced very easily.
