Driving a vehicle in the night is something that most of us enjoy. The roads are empty, the air is cooler, and there are fewer disturbances on the roads which helps us cover more distance in less time. However, it is worth noting that driving at the night is a risky affair and you should be extremely careful while driving in such conditions. If you are someone who regularly drives at the night or if you planning a long drive in the night, here are top ten night driving tips that you should remember.
1. Headlights Alignment: Before you hit the roads, make sure that the headlights of your vehicle are properly aligned. In addition to this, always make sure that the headlights are clean and also carry a pair of spare bulbs with you.
2. Clean The Windshield: Make sure that the windshield of the vehicle is clean as a dirty windshield will definitely restrict your visibility.
3. Take Proper Rest Before Starting The Trip: If you are planning to drive for long hours during the night, make sure that you have a proper sleep before the trip begins. An active body is always able to judge and react to a situation in a much more effective and proper way.
4. Avoid Heavy Meals: Do not eat heavy food and avoid oily and fried stuff as it may cause you to become drowsy while driving. Always have light food and lots of liquid before you begin your journey.
5. Plan Your Route: Make sure that you are aware of the roads and the area where you will be going. Always take main roads and highways and avoid shortcuts. If possible, do not drive alone at night.
6. Do Not Drive Fast: Since the overall visibility during the night is always low, avoid driving fast and stick to the speed limit set by the authorities. I personally reduce my speed by a margin of 10-20 kmph while travelling at night as it helps me drive in a much more relaxed and a safer manner.
7. Use Dipper At Night: Using dipper at night is extremely important as it not only makes the other drivers aware about your presence but in addition to this, also helps them judge better as low beam reduces the glare on their eyes.
8. Use Low Beam: Drive on low beam when there is oncoming traffic as it helps the other drivers too see better. For those who are not aware, you can be penalised for using high beams inside the city as per the law.
9. Do Not Hurry: Be patient while driving at night and plan your overtakes carefully. Majority of the accidents in the night happen because the drivers are not able to judge the speed of the oncoming vehicle.
10. Take Regular Breaks: Do not drive for long hours and take a break every 2-3 hours. Washing your face may also help you stay active and alert.
Having said this, I urge you and advise you to avoid driving in the night if possible as it is always more dangerous than driving in the day.
