The number of electric vehicle owners in the country is growing by the day, and many people are concerned about the charging infrastructure. In an effort to encourage purchasers to choose electric vehicles, the Niti Aayog has developed a draft policy for introducing EV battery swapping stations.

Battery swapping is an option that entails swapping out depleted batteries for charged ones, giving you the freedom to charge them away from the vehicle. This breaks the link between battery charging and usage, resulting in less downtime for the automobile. Battery swapping has three major advantages over charging: it saves time, space, and money, as long as each swappable battery is in use. Battery Swapping also creates a fair playing field for creative and long-term business concepts like 'Battery As a Service.'
This strategy is designed by a government think tank to encourage the swapping of batteries with Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries in order to isolate battery costs from the upfront costs of purchasing electric vehicles, hence encouraging EV adoption.
Its initial phase involves prioritising the establishment of battery-swapping networks in urban cities with populations exceeding 40 lakh people. Given the importance of two- and three-wheelers in these cities, the policy paper stated that the second phase will cover all significant cities like as state capitals, Union Territory headquarters, and those with populations of over five lakh.

Any Central and State government agency involved in implementation of battery swapping networks may consider this prioritisation when providing additional policy support and/or subsidy allocations for battery swapping networks, Niti Aayog stated in the draft policy
Demand-side subsidies granted under existing or new EV purchase schemes would also be made available to EVs with swappable batteries, according to the draught notification. The NITI Aayog has asked for feedback on the draft policy till June 5th.
