The foundation of the Atal Tunnel was first laid in 2002, and this 9.2km single tube channel is completed by the BRO (Border Road Organisation), which reduces the time to Leh by up to 5 hours. Another interesting key fact here is that Union Cabinet Ministry named this Atal Tunnel in memory of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

This tunnel is built at an elevation of 10,000 ft and focuses on all-weather transportation to Lahaul and Spiti. Also, a total of 46 km has been decreased by the total journey. Earlier, one used to travel via Rohtang Pass, which used to be open for six months and then closed due to the heavy snowfall.

We believe that with this new tunnel accessing the Spiti will be more accessible, and with more transportation, tourism too will expand. The BRO also said that the tunnel would be closed to the public daily from 9 am to 10 am and then from 4 pm to 5 pm in the evening.

The north entrance of this tunnel is located near Telling village situated in Lahaul, and the south entrance is located form about 25 km from Manali. Several people were there to witness the inauguration of the tunnel, and they said it would not only save time but also help our armed forces to reach the borders quickly.

This tunnel has the capacity to hold about 3000 cars and 1500 trucks on an everyday basis. With the opening of the tunnel, one thing that people wanted to quote was that the tourists who come to visit need to drive their vehicles in a sane manner and experience the beauty of Lahaul and Spiti.
