Kolkata Police has announced that it will be reimposing the no helmet, no petrol rule in Kolkata from 8 December 2020. This rule forbids petrol pumps from selling fuel to the two-wheeler riders without helmets. This rule will continue for 60 days after which a decision will be taken about the continuity of this rule. A similar rule was enforced in Kolkata back in 2016 by then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Read on to know more details.
As per Anuj Sharma, Kolkata Police Commissioner, the two-wheelers riders are often seen without a helmet as well as carrying pillion riders without a helmet. He further added that despite several prosecutions made by the police, the people of the city are violating the traffic norms and are regularly seen riding a two-wheeler without a helmet. In addition to this, the no helmet no petrol rule in Kolkata will help the police ensure that better road discipline is followed by the public.

As of now, this no helmet no petrol rule in Bengal will only be enforced in Kolkata and no two-wheeler rider who arrives at the petrol pump without wearing a helmet will not be given any sort of service by the attendant. Not wearing a helmet is a punishable offence under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. A number of other states and cities such as Bengaluru did introduce a similar rule to prevent the people from riding two-wheelers without wearing a helmet while the Kerala police have announced that it will be suspending the license of those who are found to be riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet.
