With an increase in awareness and the boons of electric mobility, the public is looking out for possibilities to switch to an electric vehicle. However, many people feel sceptical about this decision and are diverted because of the currently developing electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country. The Residential EV Charging Guidebook is a detailed 43-page pdf available on Delhi Development Commission's website. With the authorities actively working on the development of the local electric mobility infrastructure, they aim to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles as daily commuters by ensuring at least 25% of new vehicles on road by 2024 be electrically powered.
In order to achieve this aim, public charging station development is one of the critical factors which would play a significant role, and this adoption can be catalysed by providing effective subsidies and benefits to the citizens. Under the Switch Delhi campaign, the charging stations would be eligible for a state government subsidy of Rs. 6000 each. This benefit can now be claimed from the comfort of their homes itself as the government has decided to develop a single window facility for users to apply for this subsidy on a home charger.
Using this subsidy, electric vehicle owners can purchase a 3.3 kW LEV AC charger for an amount less than Rs. 2500 when compared to the entire market price of around Rs. 8500. Therefore, this facility can increase the level of affordability and accessibility of an electric charger near them, thus making the campaign effective.
After this subsidy was offered on home chargers, Delhi has become the first state in India to undertake residential societies under the campaign of setting up EV chargers. With motor vehicles spending most of their life in parking spaces, that spare time can be utilised to charge the vehicle. This wide approach to set up EV chargers within the premises of the residential complex can help aid to eliminate the anxiety of an EV owner in terms of range as their vehicle would be charged to a hundred per cent every time they step out of their home. Moreover, as per the price calculations, charging a vehicle at a home charger would do much less damage to the pocket as compared to a public charger.
