Skoda Slavia Makes its Global Debut - To Rival Honda City & Maruti Ciaz

The much-awaited Skoda Slavia has finally made its global debut. Built on MQB-A0-IN platform, an architecture specially adapted for the Indian market, the new model is the second all-new India-spec product after the Kushaq. The new model will go on sale next year and go on to lock horns with the likes of Honda City and Maruti Ciaz.

Skoda Slavia Design and Dimensions

Length  4,541 mm
 Width 1,752 mm
 Height 1,487 mm
 Wheelbase 2,651 mm

The new sedan measures 4,541 mm in length, 1,752 mm in width and 1,487 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,651 mm, which is the highest in the segment. Visually, the new model benefits from mini-me Octavia looks and impresses with the clean surfaces and the crisp lines. Its front-end carries L-shaped headlights that give it a sleek look, while the upright radiator grille brings the nose of the sedan in line with the latest Skoda models. The bumper has an integrated spoiler and a wide airdam that infuse some sportiness to the styling package.

In the side profile, you'll be quick to notice the 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, while the large greenhouse and the clean lines give it an elegant look. The rear-end features the signature C-shaped taillights and the 'SLAVIA' lettering at the centre of the bootlid. The rear bumper has an integrated diffuser and some chrome elements to complete the elegant look. The new model will be available in an exclusive 'Crystal Blue' shade, while other colour options include - Candy White, Brilliant Silver, Carbon Steel and Tornado Red.

The interior of the Skoda Slavia looks pretty familiar as you can find hints of the Octavia as well as the Kushaq. Akin to the latest crop of vehicles from the Czech automaker, the new model will have a classy two-spoke steering wheel with premium buttons and knobs. Taking centre stage on the dashboard is a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that should be shared with the Kushaq. It is positioned right above the AC vents while a horizontal strip runs across the dashboard to give it a layered look.

Much like the Kushaq, the Slavia features a touchscreen interface for the climate control unit but unlike the compact SUV, it gets round side aircon vents instead of hexagonal units. This, of course, is in line with the overall sleek image of the vehicle. The centre console has a clean look and houses a wireless smartphone charger near the gear lever. Moreover, it can be clearly seen that the Slavia would get digital instrumentation, which is sure to look far more modern than the rather classy analogue dials seen on the Rapid.

Other highlights of the equipment list of the Skoda Slavia include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, MySkoda connected car technology, cruise control, rear parking camera and multi-collision brake. The Slavia will have the segment-largest wheelbase, which means the interior should feel a lot more spacious than that of the Rapid. More details, though, are awaited at the moment. The new car will be launched in three trim levels Active, Ambition and Style.

Speaking on the aesthetics of the new sedan, Oliver Stefani, Head of Skoda Design, said: The new SLAVIA is a true Skoda, characterised by our emotive design language. Alongside the powerful and striking KUSHAQ, our brand-new saloon brings traditional elegance to Indias A0 segment. Its crystalline elements are inspired by the brands Czech heritage while distinctive visual highlights, such as the chrome applications on the door handles, add a unique touch to its appearance.

Skoda Slavia Specs

The Skoda Slavia would even share its engines and transmissions with the Kushaq, which means it would get the same 1.0-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI EVO turbocharged petrol units. The former will be available with 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options while the latter will be sold with 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG units. The smaller motor will produce 115 PS of maximum power while the bigger motor will output segment-leading 150 PS.

Skoda Slavia Safety

The recently unveiled sedan will be launched with a handful of active and passive safety features. There will be up to 6 airbags on offer, while the rear seats will feature ISOFIX anchors and Top Tether anchor. Electronic Stability Control, Multi-Collision Brake, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Brake Assist, Hill Hold Control, Rain and Light Sensors, Multi Collision Prevention and Brake Disc Wiping are some other features the new model will come with.

Speaking on the debut of the new model, Thomas Schafer, Skoda Auto CEO, said: With the new SLAVIA, we are igniting the next stage of our INDIA 2.0 product campaign. Following the successful launch of the KUSHAQ, we are now entering another popular segment with our brand-new saloon. The SLAVIA is perfectly tailored to the needs of our customers in India and is built with a localisation level of up to 95%. We are confident that both the KUSHAQ and the SLAVIA will allow us to leverage the full potential in this promising, growing market.

Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, stated: The successful start of the INDIA 2.0 project with the KUSHAQ truly highlights what can be achieved with global collaboration here in India. In addition to the increasingly sought-after SUVs, the premium saloon segment offers tremendous potential, and its a territory that we have made our own. The sophisticated SLAVIA stands for prestige and style. It also represents a new growth area for SKODA AUTO. With its sophistication, capable engines and numerous Simply Clever features, the SLAVIA will appeal to discerning customers in India, and it will also be appreciated in markets around the world. We are confident that the SKODA SLAVIA will continue the benchmarks set by the OCTAVIA and SUPERB, and will help us to further strengthen our dominance in the segment.
