Supreme Court Permits Registration of BS4 Vehicles Sold Before April'20

Taking care of the dealers and customers the Supreme Court recently announced that it permits the BS4 vehicles that went on sale before April 2020. The customer must have their sales record updated on the e-Vahan which should be registered by the transport authority of all states.

After switching to the BS6 standards, the first wave of the epidemic left few BS4 vehicles unregistered due to the lockdown restrictions. The Supreme Court, therefore, permits the registration for those vehicles sold before the lockdown.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), a total of 11 lakh vehicles were sold in India between March 12 - March 31, 2021 and 2.5 lakh vehicles were sold between March 29  - March 31. The stats FADA submitted states that 94,000 vehicles were sold by bodys member dealers and 1.3 lakh vehicles were sold by non-members after March 31 which estimated that around 17,000 vehicles are yet not registered on the portal.

According to the judgement from the Court, only those vehicles will be considered who have the database on the e-Vahan, the ones who do not have that will not be registered now. The transport authorities will do the registration for all the BS4 CNG vehicles this order has been issued after the recent judgement from the Delhi transport department in which they refused from registering the BS4 CNG vehicles sold before April 1, 2020, considering them as diesel and petrol vehicles. However, the latest judgement from the Court already makes them fall under the permissible emission limits.

The automotive industry in India comes with enhanced BS6 emission norms from April 1, 2020. The shift from BS4 to BS6 was an important one. That said, a larger difference in the emission norms and criteria in the BS6 one have significantly reduced Nox emissions and on-board diagnostics lead the manufacturers to re-engineer the complete powertrains.

This shift also affected the buyer's decision making as the gap in the prices of petrol and diesel machines is at par. Moreover, the market is now floating with more and more EVs and petrol engines instead of diesel ones. In fact, few carmakers like Skoda, Volkswagen, Maruti Suzuki have further stopped producing diesel engines after meeting the BS6 norms.
