Tata Motors ventured into the premium hatchback segment of India early this year with the Tata Altroz. The Altroz is a great hatchback as it boasts of striking looks, feature-loaded cabin with several segment-first features and more. The Altroz was introduced with an aim to set a gold standard in its segment. However, that didn't happen as its gasoline mill couldn't live up to everyone's expectations. But, things are going to change now as Tata Motors will soon launch the Altroz with a turbocharged petrol engine. The new Tata Altroz Turbo Petrol has now been spied without any camouflage.
If you remember just a few weeks ago, the Altroz Turbo was spied wearing camouflage in Tamil Nadu. That test mule of the Altroz was bearing a TN 37 registration number plate and was spotted at Coimbatore. But this time, the Altroz is bearing an MH 14 registration number plate, hinting that it has been spied testing near Tata's manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Pune. In these latest images, the rear profile of the Altroz Turbo has been snapped and as you can see, it gets a 'Turbo' badge on the tailgate. The upcoming Altroz Turbo will also get a new Blue colour paint scheme.
Currently, the Altroz gets BS6-compliant petrol as well as a diesel engine. It gets a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged Revotorq diesel engine. This oil-burner churns out 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Altroz also gets a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated, three-cylinder Revotron petrol engine. This petrol motor churns out 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. It is also coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox. At present, there is no automatic transmission on offer.

The underwhelming performance of the three-cylinder petrol engine of the Altroz is a bummer. So, Tata will soon introduce a new 1.2-litre turbo petrol mill. It will get the same engine that powers the Tata Nexon but in a lower state of tune. This 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol motor will churn out 102 PS of power at 5500 RPM and 141 Nm of peak torque between 1750-4000 RPM. It will come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Tata's new DCT will offer good fuel-efficiency and will be more refined and smooth-shifting than the existing AMTs of the market.
In terms of features, we don't think there will be any add-ons as the Altroz is fairly loaded with features. However, it might get minor cosmetic changes and new colour schemes to signify its sporty characteristics. Currently, the Tata Altroz BS6 is sold in five variants: XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ (O) with prices ranging between Rs. 5.29 lakhs - Rs. 9.29 lakhs, Ex-showroom Delhi. We are certain that the Turbo Petrol model will be priced a bit premium compared to the naturally-aspirated gasoline. The Altroz Turbo is expected to hit the Indian showrooms by the festive season of this year.
