Tata Motors is known for making highly capable utility vehicles. This home-grown car manufacturer showcased a variety of products at the recently held 2020 Delhi Auto Expo and also surprised us by showing some breathtaking concept cars like the Tata Sierra and near-production model of Tata HBX. But what excited the off-road junkies the most at the Expo was the Tata Hexa Safari Edition. Tata Safari was a Legendary SUV in the Indian Automotive History but was discontinued not too long ago, and to carry forward the heritage of the Safari moniker, the Indian carmaker has introduced this Tata Hexa Safari Edition.

Tata Hexa Safari Edition is basically a standard 4x4 Hexa with loads and loads of cosmetic upgrades and a sole BS6-compliance mechanical update too. The Safari Edition of the Tata Hexa gets a new unique olive/army green paint scheme which Tata says has taken inspiration from the 'earthy tones of the outdoors.' It also gets blacked-out body-cladding and alloy wheels to make it look rugged and even more eye-catchy. The Hexa Safari Edition gets purely cosmetic overhauls but these minor nip and tuck do make it look even more sporty and rough & tough go-anywhere SUV.
The interior of the Hexa Safari Edition is largely identical to the standard Hexa except for the fact that it now gets black and beige theme along with a Safari badging on the dashboard. Talking about the powertrain options, Tata Motors has ditched the lower variants and Varicor 320 engine of the Hexa which was available only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It is largely because with the introduction of the Harrier, the Hexa has become more of a niche product and now mostly off-road lovers buy it to explore new places.
Tata Hexa Safari Edition will be powered by a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre Varicor 400 diesel engine that churns out 154 PS of maximum power and 400 Nm of peak torque. It will be available with both a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Tata Motors will continue to offer AWD (all-wheel-drive) with the manual variants while the automatic version of the vehicle will be available only with the 4X2 (RWD) drive layout. The rear-wheel-driven 4x2 powertrain will also get a manual gearbox.

The launch of the Tata Hexa Safari Edition was about to take place in May this year but due to the outbreak of deadly coronavirus this seems uncertain and the carmaker might launch it at a later date this year before the festive season. The Hexa Safari Edition will only be available in feature-loaded higher trims and is expected to be priced around Rs. 15 lakhs - Rs. 19 lakhs, Ex-showroom. In other news, Tata Motors is also planning on a sub-4-metre compact sedan internally codenamed as Tata Goshaq that might replace the current Tata Tigor.
