Tata Motors is currently leading the EV market space in India. Having the first movers advantage, the Indian carmaker is consistently working to bring something new to the table. As of today, there are three EVs in the brand's portfolio i.e. Nexon EV, Tigor EV and Tiago EV. Now, as per some media reports, Tata Motors may relaunch the Tata Nano as an EV. For reference, the people's car was launched in the year 2008 as the country's most affordable four-wheeler. It was in 2018 when the company decided to stop the production of Nano, most likely due to low sales.

Tata Nano EV Relaunch

Going by the reports, Tata Motors is exploring the possibility to bring back the Nano nameplate as an electric vehicle. Doing so will require an array of modifications to the existing platform. These alternations will not only benefit in accommodating the new powertrain components i.e. battery pack and the electric motor but also make the hatchback comply with the current market standards. Apart from this, some much-required changes will be made to the suspension setup and tyres. In order to bring it back to life, Tata Motors will carry out major design modifications to the exteriors and an interior overhaul along with some latest tech features. Under the hood, it will likely use an adequately powered motor, good enough to pull the four-wheeler in the city with a claimed range of around 200 kilometres. If launched, the Nano EV will stand neck to neck with the upcoming MG Air EV, launching by mid-2023.

Tata Motors Electric Vehicle Strategy

Tata Motors plans to launch 10 new EVs in the next 5 years time. Some of the upcoming electric four-wheelers from homegrown automaker include the Punch and Altroz EV. Based on the brand's 2nd Gen Sigma architecture, these EVs will use the familiar ZipTron technology. Apart from these, the company also showcased the Curvv and Avinya Concept, which are slated for a launch in 2024 and 2025 respectively. The former will be based on the Gen 2 architecture while the latter will use the brand's more advanced Gen-3 EV architecture.
