Tata Safari Is Coming Back; New Safari's (Tata Gravitas) India Debut On January 26, 2021 - All Details

The iconic Safari moniker is finally back once again! Tata Motors has today officially announced that the upcoming Harrier Seven Seater SUV, earlier codenamed as the Tata Gravitas, will be officially known as Tata Safari. This is not the first time the company has changed the name for this upcoming SUV. The upcoming Harrier Seven Seater SUV was earlier named as the Tata Buzzard when it made its public debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2019. Then, at the 2020 Auto Expo, it made its public appearance as the Tata Gravitas. Now, the production-spec of this SUV will be officially known as Tata Safari and it will make its India debut on January 26, 2021.

Tata Safari India Debut

The upcoming all-new Tata Safari will be the company's flagship SUV in the Indian market. Essentially, it will be an extended seven-seater version of the Tata Harrier but there will be a lot of changes made to differentiate these two products from each other. Now, talking about the cosmetic bits, so from the front, the new Tata Safari will resemble the Harrier to a great extent, save for some minor tweaking on the bumpers. However, things will start getting exciting as we move towards the side profile. The upcoming Safari will be longer and taller than the Harrier and also it will get a new design for the alloy wheels and new roof rails. The rear design of the Tata Safari will give it a unique identity. All in all, the new upcoming Tata Safari can be termed as an enhanced and extended version of the Tata Harrier.

Talking about the dimensions, so the upcoming Tata Safari will be 4,661 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width and 1,766 mm in height. The ground clearance will be of 200 mm and it will sit on a 2741 mm long wheelbase. The Safari will be 63 mm longer and 80 mm taller than the Harrier. The upcoming new Tata Safari seven-seater SUV will also share its mechanicals with the Tata Harrier. This means that it will be powered by the same new BS6-compliant 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. This diesel motor will churn out 170 PS of maximum power and a whopping 350 Nm of peak torque. The oil-burner will come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and it will get a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission too. A turbo petrol motor might also follow at a later stage for the Harrier and Safari.

Also, Tata Motors in its official press release said that the Tata Safari will be based on the carmaker's OMEGARC platform and this adaptive architecture will allow the company for further drive train enhancements including all-wheel drive and possibilities of electrification in future. Thus, it is safe to assume that we might see an off-road capable Safari too in the near future. Announcing the formal branding of its forthcoming SUV as the 'Tata Safari', Mr Shailesh Chandra - President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit (PVBU), Tata Motors, said, "We are proud and elated to re-introduce our flagship SUV - Safari. The Safari, an iconic brand with a strong following, has been the most sought after SUV on Indian roads for well over two decades. In its new avatar, the Tata Safari will appeal to the socially active and fun-loving customers who seek out unique experiences and adventure."
